N00b crossfire question: WHICH BRIDGE PIN???

605 Views 9 Replies 7 Participants Last post by  Enigma8750
N00b question....

Wanting to crossfire 2x 4850s. I've read that only 1 bridge is needed though 2 will work as well.

My question is

a.) is this true?!?!
b.) if so, which crossfire pin do I use - the one closest to the middle or the one on the edge???

On a side note, does it matter at all if the cards are from different manufacturers? (in my case, MSI and Gainward)

Brand doesn't matter at all... neither does which pin you use - there are actually two pins per card so that you can crossfire three cards if you so chose to

Yes, that is called CrossefireX, you're never sure of the performance with that though. Worrth a try though

for posterity's sake, that combo is pretty much the same as 2 4850's in most instances and not really worth it, according to HardwareCanucks' review on the subject.

to answer the OP's question, for ATi, brand, clockspeed, video ram amount, none of that matters. you can fling a 4850 with a 4870X2, or mix and match like that, so long as the first 2 numbers of the card are the same, and you have enough power it should be fine. i'm certain of this for the 48xx and 38xx cards, not so sure how it works lower down the line. i also remember reports of the 2900XT and the 3870 going along well in Crossfire... if you're using an X2 card and another card, or more than 2 cards (by which i mean GPUs), you'd be needing to use Vista though.

got to love the sheer amount of info freely distributed on these forums, hey

Thanks for the info. I have 2 x 4850s (1 gainward dual slot cooler NOT GS, the other reference MSI which I will stick an accelero onto) so should be fine.

Do I need a special monitor cable? I managed to find the ATI demo on it and it says 'some cards may need a special cable'. Thanks for the help ATI.....

On a side note, the lack of info is astounding, SLI is much better documented!!!

Once I start I'll let y'all know how it goes if anyone is interested. (E6600 overclocked, P45 mobo, 2x 4850 with dual slot coolers)
The special cable is only for the old X1k series, anything 2k series and above doesn't require the special cables, just a small crossfire bridge.
I use both but when I add the next one I will have to sacrafice one for the daisy chain connection.
