Need a new PSU?

Ok, i need some help before i pull out the rest of my hair.

After water cooling my pc, it seems that whenever i do anything graphics intensive (gpu stress, games, benchmarking etc), my pc crashes. I don't think it's the graphics card (ATI 4870), as it was fine before and temps are hovering around 26c (the card can get to 110 before shutdown). Also the CPU temps are around 50c at load so no problems there (QX6700).

I have an Atrix 650T and i think the problem is not enough amperage on the 12v rails. It has 16A on each of the dual 12v rails. I'm thinking that after adding a pump and upgrading case to run around 10 high quality fans (all on 12v), the amperage is simply not enough.

What do you think? Time for a new PSU?

I was looking at the Corsair TX 650W, it seems the most reasonably priced "good" PSU, with 52A on the 12v rail.

Yeah, 16A each on dual 12v rails is pretty weak...

I think you should go with that Corsair TX650. Seems pretty decent for its price.
Well if it were the psu, it wouldn't be delivering it marketed specs. You should do some more testing first, but Im still thinking the psu was just junk in the first place.
4870 is a 150w GPU, at stock, your rig needs 330w on 12v. Corsair 650tx is a soild one and better than many generic 750w/800w psu out there.
From what I can find, that Atrix is probably a Deer/Solytech. Not good news. I highly doubt that unit could even do 30A on the 12V. My guess is that it's probably a 350W unit at best. Please get something like the Corsair. That piece of crap needs replaced

hmm yeah sounds about right, i would go for either corsair 650/750 or a thermaltake toughpower. both reputable psu's. i wouldn't just buy a psu because its cheap either ( i learnt that lesson the hard way) go for something solid and reputable, like the ones suggested above. As i say, you buy crap, you buy twice. might aswell go for something good first time round. but yeah, the one you suggested is a pretty good choice but also think about the future, if you buy something a bit beefier now, gives you room for expansion later, CF maybe?
Actually, which Atrix is it? There are a few 650W models. I would assume they are all bad but I think they one I identified as a Deer is a different model from the one you have.
antec also makes a quality PSU for a good price. I have a 650 neopower and it does well with my 2 GPU's and my OC.
Well, info on Atrix units is pretty sparse. I know the 500T model is junk. Since Atrix really aren't sold in the US it's difficult for me to get much more info than that. I am pretty sure your problems stem for the PSU. It just can't handle your rig. At least it is shutting down instead of exploding. I do have to give it credit for that.
Well at least if it blew up, I'd know for sure I needed a new one lol

Ya, but your are running the risk of taking other components with it, and you don't want that. The PSU is the backbone of your PC and needs to be reliable. As many have suggested here Corsair is their main preference, but you can't go wrong with these companys:

Corsair
Antec
PC Power Cooling
Seasonic

All are great PSU, and I'm sure there are more, but I would find something within your spec that is priced reasonably and buy it before that thing blows up and takes your other peripherals. Just my 2 cents.

This is a good one. Yes. Lucky.

I have another rig i can use until I get a new PSU anyway so I'm not risking turning it back on again lol.

If your rails vary more than 5% under load you would know its borked.

This is frustrating. It looks like it might be from a company called Unitek. I give up
. Anyways, a 650W that sells for ~£30 will always be junk.

edit: Is there a UL # on the label? There will be a RU (the R will be backwards) with an 'E' followed by a six digit number under it, hopefully.

I'll find out in a bit, not quite awake yet lol. Anyway, I was wondering, if the pc worked before, would upgrading case fans from 3 80mm to an 80mm, 6 120mm, 2 250mm, and a 140mm, as well as the pump cause the failure I'm seeing? (considering the crappy psu and amperage available.)

This quote says it all, and should be the main sticky on every enthusiast forum. I think too many people see the motherboard, CPU and RAM as the base of any system. They ain't - it's the PSU.

It's the one thing that too many people take for granted for the wrong reasons, rather than the right reasons. Invariably, that kind of thinking ends in tears...
