Need a real screensaver

I need a proper screensaver - one that's meant to prevent/reverse burn in. I just got a plasma TV, so I need something just in case I maybe fall asleep while watching something on the HTPC and it ends up on a static picture for too long. The "blank screen" is the best for those old CRTs, but plasmas are a whole different ballgame.

If you like firearms, this is a great screensaver: http://www.laruetactical.com/ScreenSavers.html. It is the one at the top, 21 MB.

Pretty nice
. I don't think it'll work well as anti-burnin though, the edges of the screen dont get much use.

I just found this for you, I've tried it and it works pretty well, all of the screen changes.

Not sure if it's actually a screensaver though :s

Crap my laptop won't run it, I'll have to try it on the HTPC in a bit. But it sounds like it'll work.

That screensaver is surprisingly resource-heavy...
use electricsheep- it does a great job, and its awesome!
set the pc to turn off monitors after X minutes, and your HD TV may go into sleep mode with no inputs to display.

Yeah I'd do this..

That way it will just turn off and you wont need to worry.

^^

Wouldn't it be better to use something that erases burn-in though? Just in case maybe something got burnt in while it was sitting there before going to sleep?
These should do the trick nicely. Not to mention quite awesome to look at.

They are really well known in the Linux world.

That is a mesmerizing screen saver, I just installed it and it works fine. Nice and smooth. +1 REP

Look for any of the many Matrix-style screen savers.
How about no screensaver, and just have it set to auto shut off the /monitor/ on the power options in windows? Our 40" LCD will shut off to stand by until someone awakens it via the mouse or keyboard like any other PC monitor, or does your plasma not have that kind of ability to shut off when the computer tells it? Just a thought to save the whole TV completely.

Sure I could do that, but say that by some chance there's some burn-in before it goes to sleep, wouldn't it be better to have a screensaver running that can erase it instead of just turning it off?

you could set how long until it shuts off, but one thing I just thought of... how will you prevent any burn ins, when a program disables the screen saver, even?

I don't know, but it's not like auto sleep is any different.

So +rep for screensavers that fit the bill

TOS say to REP for useful info. (I don't have a linky to screensaver)

To prevent burn-in:

Reduce brightness
Reduce the time static images display on screen. (EG use a screensaver)
Set HTPC to go to screensaver /turn monitor OFF after xyz time. NO Input to Plasma=Plasma to go to sleep.
Set programs /DVD drives, Xboxes, PlayStations, etc to use their internal screen-saver when idle. Configure set to go to sleep mode, or go to screensaver after xyz period of in activity.
(Most sets have a setting that upon the last press on remote starts the timer.)

I would think a Plasma conforms to the same rules of physics as any display type that in that once the damage is done, it's done.

On a CRT based set with burn-in you created a template of whatever was displaying on the unit that caused the burn-in and made a negative image of it to even the wear.

Beyond being aware of what causes burn-in and using the tips above there is no way to reverse, or erase burn-in.

For further info on minimizing the effects of burn in, I'd suggest you visit sites that cater towards Plasma sets. (AV forums)
(They should have info on how to create a negative image to even wear.)

errrr,if someone provides him with a screensaver that is right for him then it is useful info...

As someone has already suggested a "matrix" style scrrensaver here is a link to the one I use:

I would venture that all the suggestions as it pertains to the PC/ HTPC have been suggested.

.
Like nepas said, if someone gives me a screensaver that works then I'm pretty sure that falls under the "useful info" category. Because it's definitely useful to me.

Anyway, I guess I should have said erases image retention (the temporary one, not permanent). Like the scrolling bars do. If there was IR that was just getting started to burn in and you turn the TV off, does it go away in a few hours like if you were running the a screensaver?

The only thing with that is that there are spaces in between each line that just stay black.
