No overclocking (or not much), for an Athlon II 640. I want the cheapest reliable board, ATX or mATX, DDR3 preferred, only need one PCIe x16 and a couple PCIe x1 and PCI.

My step-dad's old HP just crapped out. Going to give him an upgrade: from a Phenom 9850 and a GeForce 9600GS, to an Athlon II X4 640 and a 5770.

Sorry, I don't think that'll do it. Look at the 24-pin connector location. UGH, that'd be a nightmare to deal with. Also no PCIe x1.

That Gigabyte you suggested would be a good starter choice for a 95W Athlon II x4/stock cooler/etc. no OC-ing.... don't expect as reliable overclocking of course on Nvidia chipset and remember the HT link is cut down to 2000MT/s from 4000 due to the AM2 base design of that board

I suggest you take a 760G or 740G board or other low end board on a proper 700 series chipset

This would actually be a fair choice, or perhaps this

So it came back to life. Yeah.

So he's probably just getting a GPU upgrade (his 9600GS is toast at least, he's using an 8500GT for now).

Thanks for the help, all, but I probably won't be building this system. *shrug*
