Need a set of collapsable(?) headphones

Hey, I was looking to get a set of headphones for my mom for a Christmas/birthday present but I'm not really sure what to look at.

Budget: Around $100, preferably less
Type: Over-ear (No buds)
Use: Car, airplanes, traveling

She would like collapsible ones (fold in half at the top, then the cans fold in) so they are easy to travel with. I don't know how many options that leaves me with but if anyone has any ideas, that would be great.

Thanks.

Is she open to in-ear monitors? Those are much easier to carry than collapsible headphones and they typically come with a pretty sturdy pouch. Since the use is mostly travel oriented and there's going to be a lot of environment noise, I will assume that isolation is top priority. In this case, an IEM will be much better at isolation than any full-sized headphone, be it noise-cancelling or not.

The sennheiser HD280 are passive noise cancelling and they fold up. A little out of the $100 price range but there are cheaper models in the same series that might fit the bill better.

Erm.... IIRC, there was a review on Head-Fi comparing some of these.. Not sure what they're called.

The only collapsible headphones I know by name are the ones from Skullcandy.

I'll try to go dig it up for you.

HD280pro's earpieces fold up pretty small. the headband's solid though, so no half-then-half-again folding. good noise isolation too.

here's a good review on Dan's Data blog with shots of them folded up.

edit------------------------
does she need them circumaural? there's some good earpad ones for cheap that fold up nicely, the Koss PortaPros come to mind.

Ok so I can't find the thread, but some digging reveals that the Soundmagic P10 and ATH FC700 are good choices for what you're looking for. HD280 is too bulky IMO, but mieh, each to their own.

I have the Koss SB/49, pretty good quality, has a mic too, is foldable...which is what I wanted so that i could dump it in my backpack...
Its pretty cheap too...I got it for $30...
I like the sound quality too (though I'm no audiophile

I'm not sure actually, I'll throw the idea out there and see what she says. Any suggestions as to which models are good?

They seem a bit big tbh, that was her main complaint - that she doesn't want big headphones to carry around.

Thanks for that link to the review.

Those Koss Porta Pros look pretty nice, I might read up on those a bit more, they seem to be what she wants...or something similar.

Thanks for the suggestions, both of them look to be other good options.

Thanks but I don't think she'll like the mic/mic jack. Would rather get a set of straight headphones instead. Thanks anyways.

To all of you, thank you for the suggestions, +rep to you all.

The 280pros are definitely too big, I have them and I can't really imagine using them as portable cans.

The suggestions smell heavily of Audio Technica M50(S)

Thanks for the suggestions guys (not sure how to multi-quote between pages..), +rep'd you.

Those M50's look awesome! Too bad the MSRP on AT's page is $200 which is a bit over my budget.

I think I'll grab the ATH FC700's unless I find something better, they seem to be the best and I've had AT's in the past that I loved (ATH PR05's). Thanks guys!

MSRP means nothing in headphones. Street price is what matters and you can get the M50 for ~$100 easily.

Ah very true. Not sure I want to order in case it doesn't arrive for Christmas..seeing as most of them would come internationally (I'm in Canada) and there is probably a huge rush for shipping right now..don't get me wrong I'm not trying to say no because I have my mind set, just trying to be realistic
