For about 175$ new you have the GTX 460 1GB and the 5850/6850 which perform about the same. Used cards - depends on your luck, but anything better like the 470, 560Ti, 5870, 6870 should be a good deal. Newer cards consume much less on idle and not much more on load while performing quite a bit better than the 4xxx Radeon Series.

thinking of bumping it up to $200.00
5870, 6870 or 6950 is this the order in performance?
any thoughts on what to look for and what to stay away.

It is possible to get HD 6950 for 180-200$. Their retail price is less than 240$ AR.

Generally yes. In tesselation tests (heaven) - HD 6850 wins.

Definitely a good deal, 5870's are still very viable in todays games. If you want to future proof yourself a bit get a 6xxx series card, DX11 runs so much better on the 6xxx series. I would suggest looking for a used 6950. Not to promote myself or anything but I am currently selling a XFX 6870 black edition. http://www.overclock.net/video/985987-xfx-6870-190-shipped.html
