Need clarification on Win7 upgrade for students.

So I want to get the $30 Win7 Pro 64-bit that is available for students. The problem is I am not a student but a friend of mine is willing to let me "borrow" his student email address which will allow me to buy Win7 with my credit card information. Any issues there?

I am also confused with the website, this in particular.."Note: If your goal is to install the 64-bit version of Windows 7 on a computer running Windows XP or Windows Vista 32-bit, you will need to include the Backup DVD with your Order and install Windows 7 using this DVD media."

Yes I want the 64-bit version of Win7 and yes I am currently running WinXP Pro 32-bit. The only other thing I can add to my cart is this. "Microsoft Windows 7 Professional Upgrade 64 Bit Disk Kit. Suggested if you do not have a good broadband connection or would like to have a bootable CD available for future installation."

Can't I just download Win7, burn it to a DVD and install with the CD key in the email? I want to install it on a new hard drive that is coming in the mail tomorrow. A new, fresh install. Some clarification, please.

Yes, you can download the .iso version now. I just got Windows 7 Pro this way. It also gives you the option of downloading the .exe, which you don't want. You get the option of doing a "custom" install with the upgrade disc, which just mean it is a fresh install.

Edit: Also, there won't be any issues with using a friend's email. Just make sure you print out the receipt with the product key for your own records.

Yup, he's correct. Just opt for the iso like he said and you should be fine. There shouldn't be any problems getting it from someone else's e-mail account either. I do that all of the time when I build computer's for people. They all plug in their credit card info through my one "business" e-mail and all of the order's always go through. I wouldn't imagine that this is any different

With the EULA technically that is against the rules as that is not your email account, but your friends.

They probably won't know but if they do they can blacklist the key.

There will be no issues with using his email except that its completely dishonest and cheating Microsoft out of money they deserve for this OS, even if they really don't need it.

They only do this in order to keep college kids from switching to Apple. These are formidable years in which one's lifetime loyalties can be formed. Once they get out of school they will be paying for their own computers. Being that Apple's market share leans heavily towards youth and that Apple is fairly prevalent in educational institutions, this is a way they can cut into that segment. Microsoft is trying to make future money by giving it away now.

I keep on reading these posts here and there saying what a great company MS is for giving students and the like discounts, and freebies. I read gushing posts saying how much they love MS for letting them download Win7, etc..
(Cost to MS for a download of Win7?... Not much..what 10 cents?)

MS does not offer the MSDN-AA program because they are "good", they are doing it to gain /retain market share.

MS is doing the same thing as a DRUG DEALER who gives free or low cost samples out because he/she knows percentage wise that those persons later on will be "hooked", long term paying customers.

The difference in the Drug dealer is the dealer has a product that has a substantial cost to acquire the product.
MS on the other hand has a product that once ready for distribution (RTM) if distributed via the web as MSDN-AA digital downloads are done costs virtually nothing.

The only time it really costs MS much is when you order physical media, thing is with that I still think their cost is virtually nill if they charge for shipping as they get huge breaks on shipping items due to volume.

For $29.95 they for sure aren't losing money I'd bet..

.
BTW: To the OP, best way to install is via USB. Obtain a copy of the MS "Windows USB Tool ". It will make the USB bootable, transfer over install files.
Note: The MS USB tool was pulled off MS's site, If I read it right MS "borrowed" some code and the authors caught them...
