Need help choosing a good cheap Compact

Hey guys, I know you all that browse the Photography section often have answered a lot of my questions lately. but I have another.

I'm sure this could apply to the thread below where a guy wants a nice compact camera to use. but I have a slightly different situation.

I wanna buy a little, "Nothing" fancy digital camera P&S compact for my mother for Christmas here coming up.. She will use it sometimes, but not often. Not even weekly. So I don't wanna, or really need to get something amazing like a G9, or G10 or something. I just want a cheap, maybe 8MP, or less if will perform well for her. Also Video doesn't matter.

So whats a good compact digital camera thats a good Price/performance camera that would be simple yet take great photo's for my mother? If anyone has a good suggestion please share it. I'm looking to spend under $175 if possible. I have lots of family to buy for, including a mom and dad, step mom and step dad, and both side familys... God I love, but hate Christmas. Can't we just have turkey dinner and hang out and have Hot Cocoa. lol.

Any help would be great.

Thanks!

I was thinking either Canon, or a Nikon possible a CoolPix Line

This looks good though

Amazon.com: Canon Powershot A2000IS 10MP Digital Camera with 6x Optical Image Stabilized Zoom: Camera & Photo Amazon.com: Canon Powershot A2000IS 10MP Digital Camera with 6x Optical Image Stabilized Zoom: Camera & Photo
or actually the Canon SD770 looks good, nice and simple, very small and a good price, viewfinder. My Mom struggles with anything with a lot of buttons. lol She is a little dense. So less buttons and wheels is a plus. lol

Yes, any of the Nikon or Canon PS cameras are simple to use. As always, I'm partial to the Canon Powershot SDxxxx series, particularly the SD1000. It's about the size of a pack of cigarettes, has an optical viewfinder, is very fast and has a very simple button layout and menu. And best of all, it can be had for $150 or less these days.

But if you want dead simplicity, Nikon PS cameras are the simplest, almost too much so IMO.

Olympus, nikon, sony, cannon, and in some cases panasonic are the only ones you want to go with, mostly all of theyre cams are good.

The higher end Canon SDxxx cameras and SDxxxx cameras are nice. I'll just quote myself again.

could this be what you are looknig for? 8mp 100$, great res. my hands on this this camera is amazing, it is small, a little bigger then a credit card, it does auto and manual focus. auto adjusts for light conditions. something i would expect atleast 150$+ for. it is also very easy to use and has a rechargeable battery
Thanks for the info here guys. I was thinking maybe more specific answers. I guess I should have said that.

I like that SD770 personally.
