Alright I went out and got an Acoustic Research optical cable for my PS2 is this the right one to use on my PS2 or should I get one thats marked for use with the PS2.

I have it plug into my PS2 and the control center when I pay it switches over to stereo is there any way to get 6 ch direct or is stereo and stereo x2 all it can do.

I did this a long time ago and hooked my ps2 to my sony digital tuner. I believe there is a setup option in the PS2 that will let you change the audio output type. I think I set mine for DTS.

If that doesn't take care of it for you, PM me and I will have my son take a look at ours for me. I don't touch the thing anymore for fear the kids will throw me out. LOL

By control cventer do you mean reciever? What model is it?

Any optical audio cable will work fine, you don't need the Sony branded one. Like jph said, you'll need to go into the settings on your PS2 and change the "digital out" setting to whatever format your reciever supports. Also, you might need to put the reciever into ProLogic or ProLogic II to get 5.1 sound, as I belive the PS2 only supports stereo for games. ProLogic will emulate the surround sound, and does a pretty good job at it most of the time.
