Ok so been out of the pc building scene for a while. Have not been keeping up with anything. But I have figured out that Skylake is relatively new. My sandy bridge build has died. Static electricity has killed it. I walked in and touched the metal front of my computer case and "snap". A huge discharge of static electricity and the computer instantly shut down. When you turn it on the mem ok led lights up, then as soon as the cpu led lights up the computer shuts off. I've tried a million things and determined it has to be the cpu or mobo or both. So not gonna waste money on an aging machine, moving on.
First off, this computer is only used for gaming, surfing, video watching, listening to music. No crazy video encoding or anything along those lines. With that being said, 6600K or 6700K. Is hyperthreading really that important. And will it make a huge difference in games? I will be overclocking this cpu. Or maybe a 6500? Seems the 6600k is the sweet spot in price for performance. Whats your opinion?
Second, I have seen some Z170 boards that support DDR3. I have 16gb's of DDR3-1600 ram from the sandy build that could be reused. IS DDR4 worth it? I have read that running ddr3 at 1.5 volts will burn out the mem controller on a 6600K. Any truth to this? If so then its ddr4. If not then I would be happy to reuse this ddr3.
And thirdly, Since I have not been keeping up with stuff, Is an Skylake build... ok? Is intel about to release a new cpu next week or in the next couple weeks? Something better I should just wait on?
Thanks for the help.
