Ok so been out of the pc building scene for a while. Have not been keeping up with anything. But I have figured out that Skylake is relatively new. My sandy bridge build has died. Static electricity has killed it. I walked in and touched the metal front of my computer case and "snap". A huge discharge of static electricity and the computer instantly shut down. When you turn it on the mem ok led lights up, then as soon as the cpu led lights up the computer shuts off. I've tried a million things and determined it has to be the cpu or mobo or both. So not gonna waste money on an aging machine, moving on.

First off, this computer is only used for gaming, surfing, video watching, listening to music. No crazy video encoding or anything along those lines. With that being said, 6600K or 6700K. Is hyperthreading really that important. And will it make a huge difference in games? I will be overclocking this cpu. Or maybe a 6500? Seems the 6600k is the sweet spot in price for performance. Whats your opinion?

Second, I have seen some Z170 boards that support DDR3. I have 16gb's of DDR3-1600 ram from the sandy build that could be reused. IS DDR4 worth it? I have read that running ddr3 at 1.5 volts will burn out the mem controller on a 6600K. Any truth to this? If so then its ddr4. If not then I would be happy to reuse this ddr3.

And thirdly, Since I have not been keeping up with stuff, Is an Skylake build... ok? Is intel about to release a new cpu next week or in the next couple weeks? Something better I should just wait on?

Thanks for the help.

You could go AMD FX 8 core, and a good motherboard if your using the 9series or want to overclock.
If nothing else died then your good to go.
Simularly skylake and motherboard exchange done

Extra ddr4 if ddr3 can't be resued

Sorry no AMD's. I want an upgrade not a sidegrade or downgrade. Thats why this is posted in the Intel section.

Yes I do. These are your only options, and they all suck.

Gigabyte GA-Z170-HD3
Asus Z170-P D3
ASRock Z170 Gaming
Asus Z170M-E D3

Sorry for the weird formatting. I copied them from pc part picker.

The asrock board is the only one I would even think about recommending, and it looks pretty sad.

I would honestly go with an MSI z170a sli board and a cheap DDR4 kit.

The price difference is about 50 bucks which is a sizeable chunk of cash. But if you cheap out on a mobo, you are not going to get great overclocks and the reliability of the system will suffer.
