Ok, so the metal part of the plug snapped and was stuck in the connector.. correct? Then he was able to get it out, but still no sound.

First, the silly things:
1) sound is turned on?
2) there is no part of that metal part left in the connector?

If that's all fine, then I suspect that when trying to remove the plug, some damage has occured to that connector, and that the mobo still "thinks" that there is a external speaker set plugged in. Do you have spare speakers to try?

My only suggestion goes to setting another speaker plug in and "twisting" it a bit in the plug and putting it out again.
