Intel E8500
Gigabyte EP45T-DS3R (Bios F4c)
8GB (4x2GB) Kingston HyperX DDR3 1600_9-9-9-24 (#KHX1600C9D3K2/4GX)

The only way I can seem to get truly stable is to run everything at [Auto], which underclocks the RAM to 1333 Mhz at 9-9-9-24 timings. I've tried looking at some of the other E8500/E8600 setups with my motherboard on the forums, but even setting the same BIOS settings as those doesn't work for my rig.

I have run it semi-stable for a long time at 3.8 Ghz (400 x 9.5) CPU, 1280 Mhz 7-7-7-20 for the RAM, but I will still encounter random crashes. Or in the case of Chivalry: Medieval Warfare, constant crashes.

Based on the above, I don't think the CPU is the problem - it seems to be a Mobo/RAM issue. Any help on getting the advertised spec of 1600_9-9-9-24 or anything better than auto-underclock would be much appreciated. I think OC'ing the CPU will be painless after that.

Hello

You should first test the ram on stock CPU Speeds, and see if you get the Ram stable on 9-9-9-24 1600mhz.

The reason for the issue you are having, is that if you up the FSB, the ram speeds raises too.

So it will reach OVER 1600mhz, to counter-act that you have to set a Lower Memory Multiplier.
(Like 1333mhz, but because you OC FSB it will be higher)

You should first find your maximum CPU OC while leaving the memory as low as possible, and run Stability Test software,
after you reach a stable cpu Speed, then you should try tweaking the Ram speeds / timings.

Sounds like a plan. Forgive my ignorance, but how do I set my BIOS settings to make that happen? It seems to me like I can't run the CPU @ stock speed and also run the RAM at 1600 Mhz 9-9-9-24 with the settings I've tried.

Well, after some tinkering, I've arrived at a configuration will run Prime95 for 10+ hours before I interrupt it:

E8500 @ 3562.5 Mhz (375 x 9.5)
8GB RAM @ 1200 Mhz, 6-7-7-19 timings (FSB:RAM 5:8, 600 Mhz x 2)

Should I still try to get the rated 1600 MHz 9-9-9-24 out of it? Looking for any and all advice on improvement.
