I'm moving to a basement apartment that has the houses router in the basement closet and I have full access to the Internet/cable but I want to get the most reliable and fast connection but with minimal wiring preferably. I have a xbox, htPc, and GC-100 (opposite side of room from router) to conncet to the network and a xbox in the bedroom.

My options are to run three wires aroound the living room and one to the bedroom
Or
Run one cat5 cable to network switch (which is obviously a cleaner setup) and the connect to my devices from there.

Is this recommended or is there something easier to do?

Option 2 would definitely be the way to go.
That is unless you want to run wifi for the devices....

do option 2. an unmanaged switch, or even a router in switch mode ftw.

i have a setup with a switch now and it is easy to manage cables.

Yep, switch is easiest if you need one uplink cable.
You can easily hang switches off of other switches if required.
