OK guys i have a radeon 9200 and as you probably guessed is lacking in performance, im looking to upgrade and have my eyes set on the sapphire x1600 pro 512mb agp but im not sure i would like to keep it under 180.00$. I hear the 6600 is also a good choice but it doesnt have shader model 3.0, and i was also wondering the performance difference between the 1600 and the 800 series. Is the 800 really that much better for the price. I play cod2 mainly and i want the highest possible framerates for the buck, any help on the subject would be greatly appreciated

The 6600 GPU does support Shader Model 3.0.

Supercharge your gaming with the power of an NVIDIA GeForce 6600 GPU. The NVIDIA® GeForce™ 6600 GPUs deliver best-in-class performance and advanced visual effects for next-generation games. The only GPU in its class with support for Microsoft® DirectX® 9.0 Shader Model 3.0 and with support for PCI Express.

But I wouldn't go for a plain 6600. I'd go for 6600GT at the minimum.
You might even consider getting a 6800 card (like the 6800GS) as they all come with a 256bit memory interface.
You also want to check the XFX versions as some are equipped with GDDR3 Memory.

For an ATI, I'd go for this one (less than 180 USD).

I wouldn't go either for simple 6600s, maybe 6600GT can be a good option. I would choose to a x1600pro, but only with 256ram since it can't use more than that (because of the 128bit mem controler). I'm preety sure that a 256Mb can OC better than a 512Mb card.
If you don't care about sm3.0/HDR lightning you could go for the x850XT since it is faster than any of the others, but with the cost not having the best image quality settings.

So you guys are saying the x800 series is fast but without the image quality and the x1600 512 is basically worthless with the 128mb interface, the only reason i was considering the 512 version was that i only have 512 of ram and thought it would maybe help. im hoping to order this within the hour so if anyone has any objections lets hear them cause im leaning towards the x1600 256, unless someone here objects?

I just recently posted a similar thread and upon review i have chosen a x1600pro simply because its newer technology, image quality is not that much supeior to 6600gt and they score pretty evenly in benchmarks. Prices I have found are the same. If you have $180 i would recommend looking at a 6800 series card possibly the 6800gs as they can be unlocked to 12/6 and have a 256bit interface they also overclock quite well.
EDIT: make sure you have a decent processor when running any one of these cards to make sure it doesnt bottleneck if your not sure post your system specs and we can determine if you got a powerful enough machine.
if not have a look on ebay for 9800xt's or 9800pro 5700le or 6200 6200oc (or a card similar to these) as these cards would perform decently in newer games.

the 6800GS AGP can be unlocked to 16/6 from a stock of 12/5. That is probably your best bet in that price range for AGP

Exactly my point (since it's an AGP and can be unlocked).

In my previous post...

Try this one or just download the latest one from Nvidia that corresponds to your operating system.
