I am building my first computer and I would like suggestions as to what parts to get and where to get them so that I get the most for my money. I will be starting after Jan. 1, 2010 and my budget is $1500-$2000. Any help in this matter would be greatly appreciated.

That is a WHOLE lot of money for a build.

You can build a decent setup for about $800.

What are you using the machine for? If games, what games? What resolutions?
id go core i5 or Core i7 LGA1336 and get a nice X58 board or if you go core i5 (LGA1156) get the Asus P7P55D Deluxe board
Ok so this is what i would build for a first rig. Now on the GPUs i went with a mid end Just because when the GT300s come out Sell them and buy a GTX3XX. This would be a Great first build and will save you some money. There is nothing you cant do with a Q9550. Also you should be able to get that cpu to 4GHZ no problem.

This will be mainly used for gaming. My friend suggested I go an Intel 1366 build. The budget ($1500-$2000) also includes a monitor and peripherals.

What size monitor are you looking at? This will help us pick a suitable graphics card. And just to clear things up, do you have any preference to Intel/AMD and Nvidia/ATI?

I will start off by using a 720p but will go up a 1080p screen, that is, unless you think I should pick a different screen. As for preferences I'm leaning towards Intel over AMD and Nvidia over ATI.

That is a good amount of money for a gaming computer. The computer in my sig only costed about $1200 or less! I would get an I7 and a DX11 card

So you're looking at a fairly high res, then. Because you've got a nice big budget, I'd be taking a look at Intels Core i7 series with a decent X58 board. I don't think you have the need to SLI, but if you want to the eVGA X58 boards are pretty decent.

As for a GPU, I'd be taking a look at the GTX260/285/295 all depending on your budget. Take a look at this chart on Tomshardware to get an idea of the performance of each set up.

If you want any help picking any items, feel free to PM me
