I originally made this post in the NVIDIA Cooling section but I haven't gotten any replies and noticed that section isn't very popular. If I did anything wrong by posting the thread in two separate sections I'm sorry. Honestly I'm not sure which section I should have put this in anyway, it involves GPU cooling and it's air cooling. I'll copy and paste my original thread from here http://www.overclock.net/t/1365383/need-help-with-gtx-570-cooler .
For awhile I've noticed sort of a ticking noise coming from my computer. It sounds just like a hard drive quietly seeking. I always assumed the noise was the hard drives as I used to have 2, but after hearing no change in the noise after replacing one HDD with a SSD I was puzzled. I completely unplugged the hard drives and turned all the fans off and the noise was still there. Finally I took out the video card and powered on PC and bingo. I never thought it was the fan because it makes the same noise at any speed. It's almost like quiet crickets in the background. It's started to make more noise lately and it's starting to get annoying.
I talked to EVGA and they said to RMA the card, but I really don't want to send in a perfectly good card only to receive a refurb in return that may or may not have issues. I've been looking at aftermarket coolers and this is where I need some help deciding. It is a stock reference EVGA GTX 570 card. Here are a few of the coolers I have looked at and the current prices. I really don't want to spend more than about $60-$70 if I can help it.
- Arctic Accelero Xtreme Plus II - $60
- Arctic Cooling Accelero Twin Turbo II - $40
- Gelid Icy Vision - $55
- Prolimatech MK-13 - $60
- ZALMAN VF3000F - $70
At these price points which cooler would you recommend? If there is a better one that isn't on my list please let me know too. I was sort of thinking about going with the Accelero Twin Turbo II because the extra weight of the Xtreme Plus II worries me. I'm not really sure I need much more than the Twin Turbo II. Currently all I have is a moderate OC on the card. My other concern is making sure the cooler fits. I have a sound card in one of my lower PCI slots and don't know how much that would block airflow. Here is a crappy picture of how I have things now.
