X-540's no doubt. you will not be disappointed for that good of a deal on a 5.1 setup. a buddy of mine got some and i envy him every time i hear them because they are just as good as my $200 g51 setup I bought a little over a year ago--but are half as much

Or the Youp Pax drivers:

And the X-540s are good, but they're not so amazing for music.

or

These are what I'd choose.

I guess I should say: I'd take the X-540s for gaming (their positional audio should be much better, due to there being many speakers, useful for FPS gaming where things like that are important, you'll be able to hear them coming
), but the speakers I linked for music.

Up to you which is more important.

Headphones are generally better for music at a fairly budget-ish price point anyway.

Edit: I've got no idea which drivers are better, actually.

But you've given me a plan: I'll do a comparison of Creative's drivers, the danielk drivers and the Youp Pax drivers, keeping all the other variables the same, then make a thread with my results.

I agree. But I think you meant that the X540's are better for gaming

I think thats ok.
Ill more than likely be playing more games on it than listening to music.
Even if I don't I should be getting a good headset soon.

I got the X-540 and they are very good. Use them for music mostly because i use my headphones for gaming.

If you're going to get a good headset/pair of headphones, make sure it's a pair of stereo headphones.

Surround sound on a pair of headphones/a headset is nothing more than a gimmick...

For rock, you can't really beat Grados. For bass-heavy music, I'd probably take a pair of JVC RX900s. For classical/acoustic music, take the Sennheiser HD555s/ATH-AD700s (The ATH-AD700s are also some of the best headphones available for gaming). Of course, this isn't taking headphone amps, into the equation, and it's a fairly budget list as far as audio goes.

Edit: And a Zalman Clip-on microphone, to make them a headset.

The X-540's are an awesome set of speakers for the price, I'm using the old X-530s are they are just as good just minus the controller.
I am very happy with my X-540s. Damn good sound for the money. Newegg has them right now for $73.99 after rebate. I did have trouble with the cable for the right front being too short since I wanted the sub on the left side of the amoire. I had to buy an RCA adapter and a cable to make it work. Also, the controller is hard wired into the sub and may cause some trouble if you try to feed it through a hole in your desk.
