Need RAM - ASUS P4P800 Deluxe

1068 Views 15 Replies 4 Participants Last post by  Ruski1982
Hi all,

I am currently thinking of upgrading my ram to something brand name with a look for the future. Right now i am running:

1 x 1GB DDR400 RAM (Samsung)
1 x 512MB DDR400 RAM (Infineon)
3.2 GHZ (Overclocked from 2.6Ghz)
Asus P4P800 Deluxe Motherboard

I have had some issues with my ram, in the last few months my pc just reset on its own 5 times or so. I thought it might be due to the overclocked CPU, so i reverted back to 2.6 for a while, but it reset anyway. Its not a big problem but i got a feeling its my RAM. I decided that i want to upgrade to probably 2GB of OCZ or Corsair.

I also want RAM that i can mirgrate onto future systems.

Could some of you who are more knowledgable on this, give me some advice as to what RAM i should purchase for my current hardware and future setup?

I was thinking:

OCZ 2Gb PC3200 DDR EL Dual Channel Platinum Edition

or

Corsairâ„¢ 2Gb XMS3200 TwinX Matched Pair C2 Series (TWINX2048-3200C2)

Thanks for all your help guys.

I would go with the OCZ over the Corsair.

But These are DDR500 and very nice Overclockers and come highly recommended
I have been hearing that the G.SKILL are very nice too Loki.

This might be a dumb question, but Can I install DDR500 into my Asus P4P800 ???

It's not a dumb question
and yes you can
as long as your useing ddr not ddr2.

If you could fill out your system specs that would help

Sweet, just figured out how to fill out all the Specs as you requested Loki.

So the best advise so far is:

G.SKILL Extreme Series 2GB DDR 500 (PC 4000) Dual Channel Kit System Memory

Looking at my specs can someone make sure that i wont have issues with this unit and that its the best for it? Also, i want to get something that i could migrate into a new system a year or so from now.

Thanks again for the quick replies!!!

P.S. Asus P4P800 is rated at Dual DDR 400
Welcome to the forums.

Are you running a 2.6A or a 2.6C? You can check with CPU-Z or a similar utilitity if you don't know off hand. There's a huge difference between the two as one runs at 100 MHz and the other at 200 MHz.

Unfortunately, if you're planning on sticking with Intel, new RAM purchased now won't be very handy down the road. All of the new chipsets use DDR2, and your current board uses DDR.

Using RAM faster than DDR400 is just fine in that (and most) boards.

I just tried checking using CPU-Z and it doesnt seem to say whether is 2.6C or 2.6A anywhere lol. Maybe i am blind.

Is there another way to check?

Also,

I noticed that i have the following memory timings on my current RAM:

FSB-DRAM 5:4
2.5 - 4 - 4 - 8

I am not really sure if thats even proper. So advise me on that if u can.
With that RAM divider, it's almost certainly a C. Just check in CPU-Z, main tab, lower left corner under Clocks to see what your multiplier is.

Everything looks pretty much in line if you have a 2.6C with 200 MHz stock speed along with average RAM and the OC you listed above.

My interest in asking was because if you had a 2.6A, you'd be running on a 100 MHz system clock, which would make PC4000 RAM significant overkill. That, however, is a very reasonable product for a 2.6C.
I did some research and it seems that Intel only manufactured 2.60C.

So i am pretty sure to say that I got the Intel 2.60C and it is running at:

Core: 3120GHz
Multiplier: 13X
Bus Speed: 960MHz
FSB: 240MHz

RAM Timings:

Frequency: 192Mhz
FSB : DRAM 5:4
Timings: 2.5 - 4 - 4 - 8

Any tips of current settings would also be appreciated.

Also so far the suggestion is to get:

G.SKILL Extreme Series 2GB DDR 500 (PC 4000) Dual Channel Kit

Thanks again for all the replies!!!

Hey Taeric,

So would you suggest the:

OCZ 2Gb PC3200 DDR EL Dual Channel Platinum Edition

over

G.SKILL Extreme Series 2GB DDR 500 (PC 4000) Dual Channel Kit

??? It seems that i can get G.SKILL for even cheaper thank OCZ and its PC4000 vs. PC3200

P.S. Whats so special about DDR2? For instance a year from now if i have the OCZ or G.SKILL and get a new pc, will this ram be significantly ****tier than the DDR2??

DDR2 is just the next generation of RAM. It uses a 240 pin interface instead of a 184 pin interface with DDR. DDR and DDR2 function very similarly; the issue is that newer motherboards only run DDR2, so DDR (on Intel systems) will gradually disappear as people upgrade (AMD currently only uses DDR with DDR2 support on the horizon).

The G.skill is rated at a higher speed (DDR500 vs. DDR400). You're currently running your system around DDR450 speeds. DDR400 can often be stretched to that point, but DDR500 won't even break a sweat and will leave much more room for future overclocking. If the timings and prices on the two products are similar, I'd go for the DDR500.
Ok here is the deal:

OCZ 2Gb PC3200 DDR EL Dual Channel Platinum Edition

Timings: 2-3-2-5
Price: $250 Canadian

So i can get that or:

G.SKILL Extreme Series 2GB DDR 500 (PC 4000) Dual Channel Kit

Timings: 3-4-4-8
Price: ~$290 Canadian

I am not an expert on timings but i am guessing lower is better so the OCZ seems better in that regard. Any comments/suggestions?

Yes, lower is better. However, the OCZ will need to be OCed about 25% to keep up with your CPU, so the timings will need to be loosened to achieve that. The G.Skill will actually be underclocked (running at DDR450ish instead of stock DDR500), so you may actually be able to tighten the timings beyond the stock timings.

With all of the talk about timings, Intel systems don't respond nearly as much as AMD systems to tight timings. Saying that in another way, Intel systems don't suffer major losses in performance because of looser timings.

If you're serious about overclocking, the DDR500 is probably worth the extra money. It'll give you a lot more flexibility, including more potential to run a divider that favors the RAM (pushes the RAM harder than the CPU which can sometimes give a performance boost). If you can afford the extra $40ish, go for it.
Well, since it seems like in the future i will need to buy DDR2 RAM anyway and wont have much use for any current upgrades...wouldnt it make sense to get the cheaper OCZ 3200 and overclock it a bit??? Especially since i have read some reviews and it seems that almost every chip of that model goes up to 500+Mhz with no problems. Anyway let me know what you think, Thanks.

Humm, I would take the OCZ here, the OCZ platinum is a little worse than that G.Skill (seeing some of that G.Skill hit 280+) and isn't rated for PC-4000 usage, so it isn't certain that it will hit 250+ to start. But, It is 50 bux cheaper, and I see what you mean by moving to DDR2 soon. But that's a really good deal on that OCZ, so if I were you, I would take it.

Ok, made a decision and ordered the OCZ since it turned out to be almost 100$ cheaper than G.SKILL after all was said and done. So hopefully it will pull through for me till i get a new system a year or so from now.

Now i got 800GB+ of HD space, 2Gig ram, 3.15Ghz, ATI X800 XL. Should be enouph to last i hope lol.

Thanks again for all the suggestions.
