Buying 2 new 92mm fans for my cpu, and was just wondering why some of the fans on Newegg specify some of them as 3 pin Molex and others that are exactly the same just say 3 pin?
Im just looking for a standard fan that my bios will control on its own.
I was told that buying just any case fan with a Black, red, Yellow wire combo could ruin my MoBo and i would need to find a Fan that had a Black, red, Blue wiring. Is this true or can i run any case fan to my MoBo/Cpu?
I'm fairly certain wire color does not matter, it varies by manufacturer.
Also to answer your original question. 3 pin molex is powered direct from the power supply and runs full speed always(unless connected to fan controller or has switch attached). 3 pin is powered from small 3 pin connectors off the motherboard and can be controlled via BIOS or software utilities generally.
Hmmm mixed answers... thank you for the replies. Newegg shows 3 pin connection to the mother board on there picture but says its 3 pin Molex. Im confused.

Edit: added more info
PSUs have no 3 pin connector.... 4 pin molex is where the fans run at full speed.
Ok 1 more questions for you xHassassin. Im pretty sure running 2 fans on my heat sink wont be a prob watt wise because im not running that much on my Mobo as it is, but i cant find what my Max watt is for my Mobo. Heres a layout of mine http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/d...s&lc=en&dlc=en. what do you think?
let me explain. I recently changed my Pc case to a antec 900-2. The case comes with 4 fans in it already. I had to unplug my old 92mm case fan which ran to the system fan 3 pin connectors because there was no room. Now i get a sys fan error, so i thought buying a heatsink that allowed 2 fans would solve the problem. 1 fan pushes air through heatsink other pulls and goes right out my 120mm case fan.
