Hello.

I was going to help my uncle with his computer. He recently got Internet so he just wanted to use his old computer for browsing.

So the thing is, He really wants to listen to online radio, but I can't get it working. Even after I installed flash player I can't watch movie at youtube.

At youtube I get a warning/Error: The program has done a illegal operation.

We're using the latest version of Opera web browser.

Anyone have a clue what we can do?

What's he's trying to say is that Win 98 is SOOO old that the programs you're trying to install (Flash, video and audio codecs), probably don't work with it seeing it's a 16 bit OS (right?)....all the coding is probably at minimum 32 bit...

So - he's out of luck trying to play with 2009 technology on 1998 hardware.

You may need to install OLD codecs specifically written for 98... and you'd need to do the same for flash and whatever he's using for radio (highly, highly unlikley)

I've been thinking the same. 1998 hardware ain't the problem but more likely the windows 98. But I doubt this computer can run windows XP. I got a stripped version thought.

The system is a 32bit.

Correct, windows 98 is absolutely not compatitable with todays hardware and most software. It does not have the proper drivers, will not update at all and consequently will not work with the most recent browsers or browser ad-ons.

Sorry dude but best bet will be an upgrade to XP or install a version of linux on there. If youre just using it for the internet you should be able to get a kernal that will work with his hardware and allow you to view most web pages, and it should be free.
Install him a base version of Linux, especially if your uncle isn't very computer-savvy, he'll be just as bad on Windows than he is on Linux, except the chances of viruses and spywares on Linux won't be much of a threat to him.

I ran xp on a p3 @ 550mhz, 8mb of ram and a 40gb hdd.
with an nvidia 64mb graphics card.

I have to agree with what everyone else is saying about switching over to linux. I would check out Ubuntu because it seems to be the most user friendly.

If not I would download something like Avira and check for malware because that can offen mess with flash.

Does the same thing happen in other browsers?
