Ok so im not very good with PSU and i want to get my dad a BFG NVIDIA GeForce 9800 GT 1GB PCIe 2.0 with EcoIntelligence Low Power Design and i don't know if his psu can handle it so i thought i would finally post something on here and let you guys do what you guys do best

His computer is a rb44g sony. His psu spec is a 305w. He will be upgrading his psu in the near future because he was going to get himself a new card, but what better way to surprise him but to get a better one for him eh?
Thank you guys so much hopefully we will be able to make an old man happy

Given the age of the system, and the age of the PSU, I'd recommend upgrading to at least a:
(one ot these, whichever you like more)

notice I only chose three proven brands (specifically, proven models from those three brands
).

It's because of the 12V rail. Older spec PSU were 3.3V and 4V heavy, because older CPU drew most of their power from there. Some time ago, many manufactures agreed to stay on the 12V rail for high power electronic compnenets inside of a computer (higher volts needs fewer amps to feed the same wattage), but PSU manufactures took a bit to catch up

Hmmm well i think i will grab an antec for him then since that is what my brother has and it works great and it has been powering a card that requires 400w while it only being a 350.
Thanks guys for the help! Was really hoping i could get away with waiting on the psu, but oh well.
Again thank you guys

Just a thought. The card wouldn't be bottlenecked by anything in his system would it? I didn't think of that earlier sorry

It depends on the game. Most will be allright, as his CPU has HyperThreading, iirc.

But you cannot upgrade much on that chipset, and probably no Core 2 cpu, either, so it doesn't really matter

Intel 915 chipset.
945 is the min for Core 2, I think...
