Hi hi. My coworker wants me to build a $200 PC for his 7yr. old daughter, of course he'll use it too. But both are new to computers so they will only be doing basic internet browsing, office applications and watching movies. No video games, other than on line flash games.

Budget is small, i know but its for a basic rig. =)

The following is from a Fry's add:
Compaq
AMD Sempron LE-1300
2GB Ram
250GB HD
Windows 7
DVD/CD writer
Nvidia GeForce6150SE Graphics with 256MB Shared Memory.

$309- $60 instant savings= $249.99

This is what he was looking at in the paper today.

It can get you a rig, although i dont think its reasonable to include a monitor or OP system under 200

For a monitor a great place to buy them is on craigslist and buy a old CRT monitor for like 10-20 bucks.

Shopping on craigslist is just about the best place for such a low budget. You can usually get an older P4 rig or low end dual core used for $200. Just hook him up with a fresh install.

Not including the OS. With a $200 budget. Am I better off buying a used DELL or major brand PC? Really? I don't need a monitor just the computer, no mouse no keyboard. Just the working box.
Here's what I had in mind.

Alrighty, let me give this one more try.
If I where to build a computer, using $200 not including the OS. What hardware would I use? They have like an 8 year old computer from what he told me and we'll be using that xp to install in the new one.
Here is what I have so far:

Mobo & CPU: AMD Athlon II x3 435 & Gigabyte GA-M68M-S2 (or similar Sale) 69-10mir= $59

HD 250GB From Sales here. $35 http://www.overclock.net/legacy-sale...ots-stuff.html

RAM $50 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820231098

Computer Case+PSU $20 http://sfbay.craigslist.org/sby/sys/1497125895.html

Wouldn't this be bettern than an old used P4 Dell computer?

I have a word for you, it's called, "USED"!

You can get like a Dual Core Used for around $150-200.

Check your local smaller tech shops, they offer a 30 day warranty too.

The Operating System will cost you a minimum of $120 on a new rig mate!
Even if you used 2 Gigs of DDR2 RAM and a Single Core your going to go way over $200.

That's just not feasible in todays market. There are cheap new computers w/o monitors for around $300 at walmart, that's about as cheap as it gets I think. (loaded with an OS that is.)
