Neglecting my zooms...

476 Views 12 Replies 10 Participants Last post by  nuclearjock
Ever since I got my 50mm 1.4 and 85mm 1.8 I stopped using all my zoom lenses. I used to leave my 24-105mm mounted 24/7 on my 40d, but now the 85mm stays mounted and the 50mm is on my 20d.. Now when I go out walking with my camera's the primes come along and the zooms stay in the car...

Is this normal? Or am I just strange? Don't answer the second one..lolz

Thanks...

It's normal, that's why I'm planning to sell my 70-200mm.
I have the same level attachment to my primes, but still have much love for my zooms.
I have even thought about selling the 3 I have and buying a 5D mkII body and another prime...

Hmmmmmmm
I felt the same way when I bought my first prime. It was just soooo fun to use it, and gave you a good workout

...Just so you can buy a F/2.8 IS!

If I had a 200 f/2 VR, I wouldn't be using my 70-200 AT ALL! And I do love my 50 f/1.4, the micro adjust makes it perfect wide open.
I've been very happy with the zooms I have that are well constructed "pro" zooms, i.e. 24-70, & 70-200. My 80-400 also produces some beautiful images and is useful when it's impractical to carry my 400 f/2.8 and I need control of composition (cropping).

70-300 ok
18-200 kinda sucks
24-85 beautiful cheap discontinued.

Check out this article for a comparison of the nikon 70-200 VI, VII, and 200 f/2.

Kind of interesting. The 70-200 VII comes very close to the 200 f/2 @200mm.

I love the pictures I get with all my zooms and the 70-200mm 2.8 is second to nothing IMO, but for some reason I really like using the primes and they are a lot lighter than the 3.2 lbs 70-200mm 2.8 IS lens...

Those poor poor babies if i only had a canon and a dollar to my name, I would take those babies off your hands. Right now i have two kind of junkie low end nikkor toddlers, that get used hardcore because i cant buy them a brother or sister for a while.
I love my primes, and I'm too cheap/poor to afford similar quality glass in the zoom type.

I carry my D3/400 in a monopod with a full gimbal (about 16 lbs total) for sports and wildlife so the "little" zooms seem like nothing to me. I guess it's all a matter of perspective.

I do have a favorite prime though. It's my 85mm f/1.4.
