Netbook as File server ???

9671 Views 47 Replies 19 Participants Last post by  the_beast
Hey guys, I am thinking of getting a acer netbook for $200 from target, and just adding an external 1tb drive to it, and leaving it on 24/7 for most of the year.

Do you guys think the netbook would overheat if its on 365 a year ? it would be sitting on a self in my basement usually around 60 degrees in there. Or am i better off spending more money and getting a same specs except desktop like for example the acer ION.

regardless i need one that will be able to stay on at least 360 out of 365 a year with out over heating.

will be a file server for my home network/vent server.

It shouldnt..

Just take the battery out and plug it in to the wall.. That way the battery wont heat stuff up.

I was thinking of using the battery as power back up, when say my house power goes down.

I run the Asrock ION 330 (http://www.asrock.com/nettop/spec/ION%20330.asp) with 5 external USB drives connected to it as a file server without any problems...
it should work just fine. and i have had my netbook on for at least 2 weeks now straight and no problems

How often does the power go out at your house?

Well a good 5 times a year. but when it does usually for 2-4 hours

you could get a basic atom system without a screen for less and use it as a server.

Unless you want the ability to change functionality later.

but if you were to go the non-netbook route, look for a 300 series atom as they're true dual cores.

I most likely will.

At first I was going to get one of those acer ion desktop things the size of a dvd drive.

But then saw this netbooks with a screen and keybord AND mouse, and got me thinking

but I just don't want this thing to over heat and die on me. As I wasn't sure how much these thing heat up when they stay on for say 4 weeks at a time.

hmm..

guess im blessed to live in a small town..

Only time power is out is when an ice/snow storm ruins a line.

Well you might as well leave it in then.. Just gonna heat up is all.

I was thinking that would be overkill in this case. A dual core for file server, and vent server that doesn't even use 30% of cpu. Also I haven't seen anything cheap as far as desktop atom or netbook atom goes for less then $200 with everything in it already (ram,hd. etc)

Heya,

It will work perfectly fine. Netbooks are great little machines. You don't need a dualcore for your needs. Netbooks have a very low energy draw. I have a watt meter and set my Netbook on it with a camera going and everything to see what it's draw was, it was like 45~47 watts or something with a camera on and displaying images and some apps running. I've run mine for weeks and weeks. I use it as a webcam server and small file server for when I'm away from home. It's great since it has it's own keyboard/mouse/display and no other hardware required. Lots of USB ports for HDD expansion if you need to add to it. You can use it wired via LAN or go Wifi with it, right out of the box. And depending which one you get, the battery lasts a long time on these guys. Mine with the display off just idling with a webcam and server running lasts between 6~8 good hours of use, lower if under really heavy load with the display open (I have an Asus EEE Pc). It does get warm. But it doesn't get hot enough that you should worry. If you are worried about heat, then get one of those cheap little `laptop cooler' trays that have two fans to blow at the bottom of the thing.

You could build an atom desktop for pretty cheap that is more powerful and perhaps uses less power. But it won't come with a display and input devices either and won't be as small and compact as a netbook will be. The trade off is that you can build an atom desktop in a small case and make it a lot cooler than the netbook will run, temperature wise, since you can put your own cooling methods into place. The other advantage is that you can plug in more HDD's and power them through an efficient PSU (like a Corsair) instead of adding HDD's via USB which will draw power from an outlet separately or from the USB itself. I'm willing to bet that several external drives with their own power sources (like those 1TB externals) will use more power than an internal drive running on an efficient PSU.

If you anticipate needing to really expand your server in the future, build an atom desktop. If you don't feel like you'll ever expand beyond a single external drive or so, then go for the netbook. It will suit your needs.

Very best,

For a fileserver you could use your Wii if you have one. Once there's proper linux distros for it you'll be able to use it for vent too.
Just a thought, dskina has an atom PC (not a lappy) that is for sale in the FS section, it would do miles better than this. Its a dual core atom
For $200, you can just buy a WHS Atom pre-built: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16859105503

Sounds annoying to setup, as hard drives would have to be USB I assume, and only 1 if you want to change settings with a keyboard.

Yeah but your modem and router will be out of power anyways.

And then man invented the USB hub

But it's for static pages and files anyway, there's nothing to configure on the wii till we have apache on it.
