Netbook faster than desktop?

1069 Views 19 Replies 14 Participants Last post by  mmx+
My sig rig has been running [email protected] all night, and my netbook (intel atom n270) has been running about 2 hours. The desktop is on 550/2500 , the netbook is 117/2500.

Is for some reason this netbook running faster than my desktop??

would i fold much faster if i threw in a 9xxx series nvidia card?
Yeah GPU folding is way more efficient than CPU folding by a longshot. You'd need to run WINE and a Win client through Linux though if I'm thinking right.

If i run native windows, and a cheaper 9 series card, how many ppd do you think i can turn out?

It could also be that they were running different work units.

But yeah, your amd sig rig would thank you for an upgrade.
Yes, any time a netbook is faster than a desktop, it's upgrade time

Throwing in a GPU would help lots too of course.

Check the WU. They may be different WUs worth different amounts even though there are the same amount of steps in the unit.

I can't say for sure but I don't think there's a noticeable difference. Depending on the 9 series card and the overclock, you could try it under WINE and compare your numbers to what other have gotten here and make the educated decision.

well, there is a guide on this forum as far as GPU ppd goes:
http://www.overclock.net/overclock-n...-database.html

Doesn't have everything, but I think the 9600 would be a good choice as far as upping your ppd...and you could manage a few games on that.
When a netbook beats your desktop, that's when you know you need to upgrade your desktop.
9600GSO - like 3k ppd
9800GT - 4k
260 - 8k
275/280/285 - 9-10K

Pretty much how it has worked for me as ive owned all but the 9600 card. i did own a 8600 that pushed like 1500ppd
You're not running the SMP on either of them so you're getting maybe a couple hundred PPD probably (since single cores can't run SMP)

Any 9600GSO 96sp can break 3k ppd.

Both of my 9600 GSOs fold right around 3.9k. They can get up to 4.2k on some work units. They're oced to 650 core and 1800 shaders. I really need to get these cards underwater and start upping the volts.

Just be mindful of the temps. I'm sitting right at about 80C right now.

My Experience:
9600GT: 3000 PPD
9600GSO 96sp: 3600 PPD
9800GT (8800GT): 5600 PPD @ 1724 shaders on 353pt WUs, 4400 PPD @ same speeds 1888 pt WUs. I haven't found an 8800GT yet that can't do these speeds, so I would say it is safe that if you pick up a used one (~$65-70 here on the forums) you should be able to get 4.5-5.5k PPD
