Networking Simulation Game?

6013 Views 9 Replies 5 Participants Last post by  stellarhopper
I'm looking for network simulation games if there are any. I remember my friend showed me this simulation a couple years back where you set up a computer network and have to maintain it but I forgot about it and now I can't find anything. If anyone has heard of or played any network sims let me know. Thanks.

There is packet tracer, but it isn't a game. Just a networking hardware emulator, the best of its kind in fact.
Yeah cisco packet tracer looks pretty good from the videos I've seen. I'm just looking for some interactive type of software that can help me learn networking a little better until I can scrounge up enough money to get a used pc and set up my own server and mess around with that. I'm reading some net+ books right now so I would like something a little more hands on to kind of supplement that.

If you want to learn, with your system specs, just set up a virtual network on your system. If you *really* have 24gigaBYTES of RAM in that system, you could set up a whole Active Directory infrastructure in VM without breaking a sweat. You can create a "virtual network" for your virtual machines to use too.

Lol, you're the first to mention something about that. Bud, it's 24 gigaBITS which translates to roughly 3 gigaBYTES. Same with the hdd 5.12 terabits is roughly 640gb

That's a good idea, can I run Server 2008 within windows 7 virtually? I need to have access to my 7 computer while I have the server running to perform certain tasks etc... Even if this is possible doesnt it pose quite a security risk to my desktop unless I unplug the internet.

Packet Tracer is the way to go. I use it a LOT in my CCNA classes. It's very, very detailed.
Theres Wireshark which is a packet analyzer...ive messed around with it once...
Can show you entire packets, at all layers, can distinguish protocols...lots more...
Im not sure what packet tracer does...but wireshark was fun to mess with...

then again...im not a networking guy

I didn't want to assume (Ass of u & me) that you were a n00b that couldn't distinguish between bit & byte... I personally have 26TB of storage, so I didn't think it unreasonable to have 5TB of space on a single system...

Anyways, yes, you can run Server 2008 in a VM under Windows 7, no problems there, I do it myself with VMWare Workstation 7.0.

And it doesn't pose any more of a security risk than having another whole dedicated server machine. Besides, you *could* completely isolate the virtual machine from the host, if you wanted to. Or you could set up a complete network virtually, have all your VMs share this "virtual" switch, and then configure a "virtual router" that connects the virtual network to your real physical network. That way, your virtual machines don't have direct access to the network - they have to go through a virtual router device.

Try cain and abel if you havn't, it's like wireshark but has a ton of neat tools like apr poisoning, encrypted password crackers, vnc pass crackers, etc... I was abel to hack into my teachers 2003 server with it. It was for a network security class and the assignment was to hack his server btw so no laws were broken.

No harm done, I was trying my best to not sound like a jerk when explaining why I put the stats the way I did. As for running the server virtually I'm surprised you don't have problems with the virtual network card in the virtual machine and the network card in 7 having conflicts when trying to perform server client actions. I'll give it a shot, thanks for you input.
