Never Built AMD - Cheap System???

520 Views 17 Replies 9 Participants Last post by  Cobra2468
Going to throw a budget gaming rig together for Christmas for somebody. Figured I'd go AMD/ATI since it's generally cheaper and... it's not mine. Anyways, I need help choosing a CPU and MB. I don't care if it's DDR2/3. It must support CrossFireX and support no more than two GPUs. It must be cheap but perform.

Here is the motherboard I'm considering: http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product...82E16813141010

Let me know if there is a better choice performance/quality/potential wise that is cheaper.

As for the CPU... I'm thinking the X3 8750 Triple Cripple.

So yeah, I'm just asking for help with those two components. The rest I have figured out.

That board is fine and all; but you will need an AM3 CPU.

You see, AM3 CPUs are compatible in AM2/AM2+ motherboards, but you can not use an AM2/AM2+ CPU in an AM3 motherboard due to the fact those CPUs do not have DDR3 memory controllers.

I would recommend you keep that board and get an Athlon II x2. They are the best CPU out there fore gaming right now. It should OC fairly well too.
Price point?

Is this a 100% full build? Do they need a mouse, keyboard, monitor, DVD drive, speakers, etc?
That motherboard you linked wont Support CrossFireX, it only has 1x16 pci-e slot.

Nevermind, I see you changed it. Although now you picked a SLI board.
Yeah I'm lost here... I don't know anything about the AMD chipsets or... anything for that matter. And yes I did change it. Linked the wrong one by mistake but looking closer now I see it is in fact an SLI board.
You will fare much better by using a motherboard with an AMD chipset since they will support crossfire and will be less expensive.

EDIT: don't have time to link you up, but the 790xx are the high end chipsets with the 790GX being the top dog. The 790X/790FX are great higher end chipsets as well. The other ones are usually on MATX boards with onboard graphics, so i would just stick with the 790 series.

Brand recommendations: Gigabyte, DFI, and ASUS

I just need the CPU and MB. I have the rest of the components. Price point is... budget gaming.

Yes, I don't want an nForce... Over looked that little detail on that board up there.

I will say that this board has almost no vdroop with my cpu. (According to monitoring software)
You don't want to use that CPU unless you already have it. If you want to game then get a 720 X3 BE. Or if you just mildly game and use a lot of applications I'd get the X4 620.
Mine or his?
Alright thanks for the help all. I'll be going PII X3 and 790FX it looks.
