New $300 Build, Advice?

509 Views 12 Replies 7 Participants Last post by  farmboy30
well my friend is asking me to build him a $300 rig. He is giving me a 5 year old pc and just wants me to replace what needs to be replaced. He used some barebones kit, so Im thinking all im gonna keep is the case and dvd burner. So for $300 what should i get? He has a OS (XP), and all periferals. The purpose of this rig is it will be used to TEST SOFTWARE. So it must run photoshop, premier, etc smoothly. I was thinking e5200+G31+4GB+cheapest Dx10 video card i can find. I really would like this over a amd rig as e5200>>>>>>athalon X2, unless someone can fit a very fast amd cpu that will hands down beat the e5200, i wont consider it. The better integrated video in amd mobos is not really too much of a selling point. So should i bother forking out some $ for a 8400/3450 for this kind of rig?
Put together what you suggest!
PS he said the HDD is like ~100GB and wants a new one. I assume its IDE, so it cant be reused anyway since the burner is also ide and most mobos have 1 ide port only and buying an adapter probably isnt worth it for it. Ill keep the spare old parts as payment. With 640GB hdds starting at $60 i see no reason to buy less, and with a TB at $88 i may even be able to squeeze that in if there is left over money.

IF you read my post i said SPECIFICALLY i did not want to do this. I would much rather do E5200+ some used $20 8400GS.
someone is offering me a e6600+p43+4gb ddr2 for $160, should I do it? Can someone fit this in to a $300 build? $140 for everything else?

here's my suggestion for you:

intel e5200 cpu, $72.99: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16819116072
gigabyte g31m-es2l mobo, $52.99: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813128357
gskill 4gb (2x2gb) ddr2-800 ram, $43.99: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820231122
western digital sata 500gb hard drive, $64.99: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16822136073
asus hd 3450 256mb pci-e 2.0 video card, $29.99 ($10.00 mail in rebate):
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814121259

subtotal = $264.95
3 day UPS shipping = $10.55
total = $275.50
after $10.00 mail in rebate total = $265.50

That build is with the assumption that you'll reuse your friends power supply.

You could add in a Antec Earthwatt 380 watt power supply and get a 320gb Western digital sata hard drive instead. The total will then be $325.20 then minus out the $10.00 mail in rebate which will bring the total to $315.20.

antec earthwatt 380 ps, $59.99 : http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16817371005
western digital sata 320gb hard drive, $49.99: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16822136098

personally, if you are going to use the machine to "test software" such as watch finished work, i would use the ide hard drive, if it works, and upgrade the CPU, because Premiere bogs down with a low CPU, from what ive used. Nothing less than 3.00 Ghz. Thats just an idea...
Well i decided on everything im at like $270 shipped with no GPU. Will buy from here on ocn too. Something that would do some basic gaming would be a bonus. If some one wants to sell a dirt cheap 8500GT or better to me ill be interested.
you can hook both a hard drive and dvd burner to one IDE port...

lol im glad you figured the ide thing

i think its funny, cuz ide has been around forever, and i've seen some ppl just assume it works the same as sata, i.e. hooking one drive to one port

good luck with the build
