new AMD rig

I won't go through the normal "I'm a noob help pl0x" BS.
I need a new system, the PSU on my x2 5200 am2 system killed my first and second mobo so I'm not gonna touch it again (except with a sledgehammer). Yes it is an HP OEM PC, and yes, as I learned the hard way, I shall ALWAYS go custom from now on.

Phenom II X3 720 interests me, I can put it into an AM2+ mobo right? OK here goes:

Phenom II X3 720
DFI Lanparty DK 790GX-M2RS (not the junior)
4GB OCZ Reaper HPC
Corsair VX550 550w PSU
Antec 300
Western Digital AAKS 640GB
XFX GTS 250 512mb
Xigmatek S1283 (stock)

Sound good? Maybe more powerful GPU? Is a GTX 260 216 worth it? I used to game on a 7950GT at 1680x1050 to compare. I play Source games competitively, I will play some other games but graphics don't bother me, I use configs to get max FPS in all my games anyways. I just want maximum power. I will probably stay at 1680x1050.

Definetly get a better PSU for head room.

it looks pretty solid to me, if you were going to OC, at least get some 5-5-5-15 reapers, or another brand, mushkin perhaps.
I would spend the extra money and get a HD4870 1Gb. As you can see, for around $200 they're a steal.

The 216 has had a price drop though, the XFX 260 216 I want is now 198. I think the two cards trade blows, but I would prefer the stock cooling of the 260.

That's a great rig you have going there. I'll second that motherboard you chose - I used to own a 790X-UD4, and the DFI is by far the most customizable.

And I wouldn't get a GTS 250, as it's basically a 55nm 9800GT. Like you said in a previous post, the GTX 260 is a great card.

Although you may want an ATI card in case you go Xfire later on. Like Kami posted, an HD 4870 would be perfect. Especially for the price.

On a crossfire motherboard I would go with the 4870...

I won't crossfire. I can guarantee that 100%.
K, I took my rig apart and saved my X2 5200. I have a new plan. Get rig, work off the X2 until I get enough money (or I really feel the need to upgrade the Phenom), and by the time I upgrade to Phenom II, it should cope well with the upgrade. By keeping the X2 5200 I can afford a better GPU. I also have a perfectly good HDD (400GB) and DVD burner from my old rig, so no point spending money on new ones IMO.

I think your 5200 is going to bottleneck the GTX280, why not get the GTX260 and use the extra money for a PII 720 (or 810).
Yeah, a GTX 280 on a 5200+ is a pretty hefty bottleneck.

I would just go Phenom now, you won't regret it. GTX 280 is overkill for source games anyways. A 260 or 4870 will suffice.
