Ok this build is not for me, but for my brother in law. He built it without consulting me first, so I cannot take any responsibility with the parts chosen. So he built it and now when ever he goes to install XP, he gets about halfway through the XP installation and it freezes. Now I took out is PSU, thinking it was a possible PSU issue, no go. Then I had him take out a stick of ram, still nogo. Only thing I can think of is, that his parts are way too new for XP to function properly. He is going to buy Vista x64 Home Premium soon, but wanted to play around with it......here are the specs....
bad dvd reader? it could be the problem also try using a windows 95 disk to format his HDD 1st then reformat it with XP, or try using a different type dvd reader eg IDE to SATA or SATA to IDE
There may be a slight possibility that is is a defective mobo. I had once a defective mobo and when i tried to install xp on it, halfway through the XP installation and it froze. If all else solutions fails, then it may be the mobo.

Well I find it funny that he used a IDE HD to try it the 1st time, froze. Then got his SATA WD in the mail, and it froze again......So it may just be the burner or the mobo.....
What kind of error does he get (if any)?, there are certain issues with SP1 of XP, where it wont install if the board has a PCI-E slot, I've had that happen to me before.
In BIOS does everything show up, and is it all working there?
Try running a linux live CD and see if everything is working in general (this will also test the Drive). He could also just install Linux to test the HDD and such.
It could also be a bad XP disk.

Yeah I seen everything in the BIOS just fine.

Bro, you try the burner option first. If it fails, then change the mobo. If it isn't too much of a hassle that is. In my experience, if this kind of problem happens, it is most likely the ram or the mobo itself.

Is it an old version of XP? Sometimes driver support isn't up to date enough for all of the hardware to work on newer chipsets. If it is an older copy, you can slipstream SP3 onto it, and that might help.
If thats not it, then like has already been said, its probably hardware related (have you tried different cables yet? sometimes it might not be the burner or the mobo, but the connection between them). Also, you tried moving the ram to a different spot, but did you test all of the ram in all of the slots separately?
Check to see if the SATA mode is switched from AHCI to IDE mode. I know you said you're using and IDE drive, but check it anyway. I had a problem with the last build I did for some with the AMD 780G chipset and XP.
It was driving me bonkers...I wiped the drive with some HDD Tool and did it that way and it worked. Really pissed me off for like two days trying figuring it out.
Ill keep doing some research...could also be a bad board too

I think its the drive personally. I am gonna test it in a hour or so......
