New CPU for WHS

1434 Views 14 Replies 7 Participants Last post by  Pheatton
ITs time to update the CPU in my WHS. It currently is an Athlon 64 X2 BE-2300. Its really having a hard time with streaming videos via PlayOn. Video on my PS3 starts to stutter then justs stops. I have checked what the CPU is doing on my WHS and its pretty much pegged between 90%-100%.

So I was thinking a Phenom 9650 would be a good upgrade for it.

Here are its current specs:

Foxconn A74MX-S
Athlon64 X2 BE-2300
2GB OCZ PC2-6400

Thisis the deal on Newegg I was thinking about. Any other possible ones to think of?

What about this http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16819103706

was looking at some of the charts on toms, looks like the athlon beats the 9650 in all the categories that pertain to your situation.

That would work except my board is AM2/AM2+. Thanks anyway.

Your mobo supports most AM3 CPU after a BIOS flash. The AMD Athlon II X4 620 Propus is officially supported.

BTW, how is PlayOn? I was interested in purchasing it...

Ohh did not notice that. I will have to check it out.

As far as Play-on goes its great. Works very well except on my current HW it starts to stutter about half way through a video since its maxed out the CPU usage....

Is there anyway to veiw system resource usage on my WHS while using Play-On to see whats going on?

You should be able to remote desktop into your WHS box from another machine and access task manager by right clicking on the task bar and clicking "Start Task Manager".

want a x2 5400+ BE? lower power consumption than that quad u suggested, and if you're running playon only, i'm sure it's sufficient
can run 3.2ghz easy!
PM me if interested so i can reopen the forsale thread

Done that. I really want to see real time RAM usage. Might have to install Everest for a bit on it...

I think that Athlon II X4 620 and two more WD 500GB green drives will set it up quite nice

Hmm... Well I love that deal you were looking at, Now going to 4gb RAM and about a TB of HDD then we'd be in business, so let me see what I have:

Cooler: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16835150096

CPU (better choice)(6mb l3 cache)(Free shipping): http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16819103683

This costs $131.99

Now you should buy this because it is considerably better and also you won't need an upgrade in the near future. The fan w/ heatsink can endure with a long life and extremely powerful so you can run your Server day and night

Can't see that cooler being any better than the stock one...
Well Im going and ordering that Athlon x4 and two more WD 500GB green drives today.

Why not just get 1TB drive.... cheaper and save power?

I was thinking about that. Better to have smaller drives so when and if one goes you don't have a lot of data loss and downtime. That's just my opinion any way

If you're using Windows Home Server, you're using folder duplication, right? If so, you won't lose any data from a hardware failure. However, data corruption is still a possibility.

There's no substitute for having a backup method in place. Pick up an extra 1TB drive or two and an external hard drive dock to back your data up.

Well got the new CPU and HDDs installed last night. BIOS update went smooth and got it all up and running. Took awhile to get all the drives sorted and installed in the correct order though.

Playon now buffers videos very fast now. Set it up to process the entire video and its done with a normal 1 hour show in about 10 min. The Athlon II x4 made a big difference!!

Now time to start encoding all my dvds and storing them on the WHS.
