New folder, HELP!

Ok, I just started folding. I got the GPU2 client working no problem (just 1 right now, as I don't want to disable my SLI). I tried the SMP client, and it seemed to install fine. It has been sitting there for 10 min and has completed 0 out of 5000000 steps. What is going on? I installed fahmon and it shows the same thing. Both cores are going 100%. Also, I can't figure out how to get the GPU2 client to work with fahmon. How do I get this thing to work!?!?

The smp work-units will take longer to complete than the gpu2 wu's. Give it a little more time. Did you point fahmon to the gpu2 folder? This is where fahmon points to in XP for me:

C:\\Documents and Settings\\User\\Application Data\\[email protected]\\

In Vista it is under "roaming", I think, instead of "Application Data". And of course whatever your username is in place of "user"

Thanks. I got the GPU2 client into fahmon (I was directing it to the program files folder
).

I figured the smp work units would take longer, but mine don't seem to start. How long does one usually take? At the rate I am going, it will probably take a few days to get this one done (still at 0).

Edit: I restarted it, and here is a pic of what it has been at for the past few minutes.

Yeah smp takes awhile. Looks like its working though.

Ok, just hopped to 1 percent. A few more n00b questions. Why is the SMP box yellow in fahmon and the GPU2 is green? Does that mean something? Also, is there a special way to pause/close the SMP client, or do I just close out the [email protected] command prompt?
Yellow means that its working but not enough data has been completed to establish how fast its folding. For your other question I'm not too sure. I know there is a command but usually I just close my window *shrugs*
It takes a couple of % to catch up. The box will turn green around 3%. If you want to close SMP just hit Ctrl +c(I think that's it, been a while since I did Win SMP)
Thanks for the help! All seems to be working now. I am going to TRY installing it on my laptop now

Ok, I put the basic client on my laptop, but it only uses 50% of my CPU (a core duo @2GHz). Is there a way to get it to use 100% of the CPU (without overloading the poor little thing
)?

You could smp it, then set usage to like 75%, or get a laptop cooler

I'd be careful with the lappy those little guys get hot at 100%. I just run mine on the normal client. But the decision is yours.

As far as the SLI, all you have to do is disable it, not actually remove the bridge. Extend the monitor and start folding. Takes me about 3 minutes to shut everything down to game, reenable SLI, and do a complete reboot. It's not that bad, as I always reboot before gaming anyway.

Thanks. I guess I will just leave it at 50%.

I thought I had to have 2 monitors to do folding on dual GPUs, has this changed?

Also, my laptop has an ATI mobility radeon x1400 (256MB). GPU2 is not compatible with it, so I suppose there is no way to fold with that beast? Ya, I think a mouse is considered a beast

Just make a dummy plug. Link

It tricks the computer into thinking you have an analog monitor. You just then extend the desktop to this "monitor" and voila folding on 2 cards in one rig.

I missed the laptop part. I just use the normal CPU client on the front page to fold with my laptop. It's not a huge amount of points but equals about 200 more PPD. I'm not a fan of the -smp for laptops as I seem to burn them out with normal usage in about 2 years. I figure the normal client won't hurt them though.
I suggest you use the 185.20 drivers with your 8800GT for the GPU2 client. I used to get the similar PPD as you (4500-5000ppd on 1680WU's) now I'm getting around 8-10k alone. They are definitely worth it.

I can concur with this. I was getting about 6500 PPD with 1 9800GTX+ and now with the 185 Drivers I get about 11,400 PPD. On that one card and the same WU.
