Early 2007 I'm buying parts for a new system.
The overall budget is 600€ ~ 750 $.

So far I go with:
AMD Athlon 64 3800+, 2400 MHz, Orleans.
A fine NForce5 Mainboard (Don't need SLI) <- Ideas?
2x512 DDR2-667 (Could go with 2x a gig or DDR2-800, but they are so expensive these days.)
Scythe Ninja (might want to overclock.)
ExelStar J8805 (SATA) <- Mainly need a fast HDD, don't care about space (need like 20GB)

AND the Graphics Card: I have no clue.
I own a Radeon 9800Pro and it works good.
Should I go with GeForce this time?
My GC budget 200€ ~ 250 $. I bassicly want to go with a non-budget version of the best that is not uber high end. (for geforce that would be 7 GT or GTX)

Will DDR2 be worth to buy socket AM2?
Socket 939 is cheaper.

Will my 420W power supplie do fine? (I think its enough W, but is there any other specification to look for?)

Apreciate any thoughts

Hey buddy,

I know u live in Europe, so im posting Newegg links to give you product names and such aswell as pics and net prices.

Video card suggestion: Geforce 7950gt aprox 235€ (which is 290$ USD) http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814130061
or Geforce 7900gt aprox 200€ (211$ USD) http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814150195

Nice NF5 mobo eh? ==> Asus board $92 USD http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813131022
OR you can scroll through this page for others http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...n=&srchInDesc=

Harddrive, you might not "need" space, but with the $ per GB around 50cents, its a waste of money to get a 20GB HD. Heres a Nice 160gb HD for $55 SATA 3.0 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16822144415

RAM==> Corsair XMS2 1gb 2x512 - $140 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820145539

AM2 is just a steping stone for AMD to go to DDR2 RAM. So ts ur choise which socket u want to go with. socket 939 is still kickin.

Looks like a nice build man.

Have fun and good luck
id get an ATI x1k series card - you get more for the money you pay, especially if you like oblivion.

ATI's cards support FSAA and HDR simultaneous rendering and they also support avivo video converter if you like to do video conversion here and there.
avivo video converter is just a driver that allows the gpu to help out when videos are converting, depending on system specs it could cut conversion time in half.

I have some ideas for your rig, I hope you'll find in Germany what I'm proposing here.

First, for the VID card I'm thinking of a 7900GS. In the US it's close to the 200$ mark, so here it should be around 200€. Reviews from anadtech here. They seem to perform ok and to OC very well. For a bit of extra cash I'd go for the X1900GT/XT.

Secondly, at least in France AM2 is cheaper than 939, at least in terms of the CPUs. For the mobo I have a sugestion if you're into OCing: DFI Infinity Ultra M2 review here . It has superb OCing abilities and it sells in France for around 100€, I suppose in DE it should be cheaper. If you don't want to OC I have no idea... maybe the MSI K9N Platinum (nf570) or ASUS M2NE. These are fine on stock, but as far as OCing they're not that good.

The PSU might need an upgrade, specialy if you want a VID card around 200e, these tend to consume quite a lot. A generic PSU has an efficiecy of around 60% so in reality you have 60%x420W which is around 250W... not enough. When buying a new PSU you should look also at the 12V rail current (amps) which should be around 20A. Newer PSUs have more 12V rails, for example my Hiper TypeS 580W has 2 12V rails each with 20A. It's a good PSU, I recomend it and it's not that expensive.

Lastly I'm thinking of the CPU. If you decide to get the DFI and OC you might as well get the 3500+ and save a few pennys since both the 3500 and the 3800 reach around 2.8-3.0GHz when OCed.

Hope this helps. Cheers!

Trust dragosmp and me, if your PSU aint up to par, this may happen to you:

I just put my new x1900xt in a couple hours ago and ran 3DMark05-06 ... As I loaded up Company of Heroes to play a bit, 5mins later I heard a LOUD POP!!! and all went black..... Then I noticed a lovely burning smell... Did I just lose my whole rig?? Thankfully, NO. Turns out my $24 PSU dont like that x1900xt. Off to newegg for a PCP&C Silencer 750; wife not withstanding.

Woops, I really hope it doesn't. Sorry for your loss, but it's all for the best, since I have a 3 year waranty . If it does pop I'll add a few more pennys and get an Antec.
As far as I have seen on the egg reviews these PSUs had a preety big death rate, but here in Europe they got reviews like "excellent/super PSU/silent" you get my point. Here the brand Hiper is a kind of a top brand (at least this is what I found) and my PSU was 50€ ~70$. I'm affraid we aren't talking of the same product.

Well the first think i noticed was the cooler, that scythe ninja isnt that great, and its huige for not being very good. Go for an arctic freezer 64, big typhoon, or zalman 9500.

The remark of the PSU by scorpion is something to think about... There ar soo many good psu's out there to choose from. I would take a look at the OCZ GameXtreme 600w. Its a great psu for the price. Since you will most likely be upgrading the videocard from that old 9800pro, youll need a good power source. New videocards can pull alot of amperage from the psu, which is probably why scorpoins just crpapped out when he was playing a GPU intesive game.

Just all some food for thought.
