New graphics card

Need some advice for a new graphics card for my home rig.

My setup is:

E6750
mATX Asus motherboard
4GB RAM
250GB hard drive
750W PSU
7950GT

Going to upgrade the hard drive and install Windows 7, and think it's time to upgrade the 7950GT.

I have a budget of £70 to £80 lovely Great British pounds ($100 to $110 in US money), and am happy to buy used. I was previously looking at the 4770 at £60 but as I could now afford a GTS250 would that be worth going for?

It's going in an mATX case so the lower power consumption of the 4770 might be an advantage, but I'll put a blowhole in the floor below the graphics card so hopefully heat won't be so much of an issue...

I'd get a 4770.

Perfect, low power consumption yet powerful.
Hmm...I know it's a bit out of your price range but, if you can, I would go for a HD 4870 which currently has a double lifetime manufacturer's warranty.

If your thinking XFX then your wrong.

I thought they offered double lifetime in UK but it's north america only.

Infact, they offer NO warranty to European residents whatsoever.

Pathetic.

All goods purchased in the EU have to work for at least a "reasonable" amount of time - I believe the normal warranty length is 1/2 years.

As a former HD4830 owner, I can tell you that the HD4830 / 4770 is no slouch! It's the rough equivalent to the 9800GT (depends on the game obviously, some games prefer nVidia cards, some ATI). The GTS 250 is basically a 9800GTX+, and should run about 15-20% faster than the HD 4830/4770. So if the GTS 250 is around 70 british pounds, then it'd be a decent deal, and if you want the extra FPS, worth the extra $. But I wouldn't pay more than 70 pounds for it given that you can get the 4770 for 60. By the way, the 4770 and 4830 are VERY close in their performance with the 4770 edging out the 4830 by 2-3%.

Another thing to keep in mind is that the 4770 is a great overclocker, and can be clocked up to 4850 performance. The 4850 is much closer to the GTS 250 in performance, about 5% slower in most games. Although, lots of GTS 250's are 1GB cards, and that will obviously perform better than a 512MB HD4850 at higher resolutions.

Well this is what there customer support told me:

Im afraid we have no say with regards to warranty, but within Europe the warranty in Europe is the responsibility of your reseller.

They are taking no responability in the ways of the warranty and just asking the retailer to do it instead and eBuyer offer no easy way to RMA.

Out of curiosity can I ask what case?

I've seen used 4870s within your budget, but size and heat (as mentioned) can be an issue depending on the setup.

If not then a 1GB 4850/4770 would do quite nice

ATI 4770...look no further it's the best that your price range can buy.
BTW the 5750 performs faster than a 4850, which is about on par w/ a GTS250. So a 5750 would beat a GTS250, while keeping very low-power/heat properties. Not to mention it's DX11 and comes w/ a free game voucher. It appears ocUK will warranty it for 2 years aswell.

It's an old school mATX one (beige box) but I'm going to hack around with it to improve the cooling - it won't be the best though, I just needed something small.

As for the 5750, that's out of budget, even with the game

Hey, as I mentioned earlier the 4770 is the perfect card for your case and price range. Not sure if you overlooked it or not...

Stick to what you originally thought...first instinct is the best one

Well if that's the case a 4870 might not be the best idea regardless. All the non-reference designs dump heat into the case and the reference coolers run hotter than all hell :/

If you can get a hold of a 1GB 4770 or 4850 that exhaust out of the case that would likely be your best option.
I know XFX makes designs mentioned above for both cards, and for the 4850 you could get a HIS IceQ

Hey old buddy.

Look for a GTS 250

4850 or 4770.

IMO a 4870 would work fine.

Hey man, long time!

Hope you've been well.

Will keep an eye out for all and see what I can pick up in the Marketplace.

that sucks. Then I would also be one of us recommending a 4770.
