New Power Supply for X-mas

723 Views 17 Replies 10 Participants Last post by  Phaedrus2129
So i'm getting a new graphics card for X-mas, a 4890. Do i need one of the real expensive $100+ power supplies? or can i just get away with a cheaper one as long as its over 600W? Any specific suggestions?

Never cheap out on a power supply, ever. What I can suggest that IS a good value, though, is Corsair's 600-750 watt TX-series units, and Antec's TruePower New series of the same wattage range. There are also Seasonic units and Ultra's X3 series, but I don't think either option is cheap.
Easy one

Corsair, HX or TX series, 750 or 850

Sorted :-D

Comps
so do you think I need at least 650W?
For a single GPU configuration, a 550W power supply is good enough, and that's with a good amount of overclocking too

You only actually need between 500 and 600 watts, but it never hurts to get more so you can accommodate future upgrades.

Argh, Chilly got the jump by a few seconds.

If you have a case (certain Antec cases, like a 1200) that fits it, the Antec CP-850 is a great deal.

$125 with free shipping for 850W. It uses a multiple 12V rail system so make sure it'll work with your video card and stuffs...

**obviously overkill but for the price why not make sure you'll be okay in the future?**

You realize that this sort of point is almost irrelevant these days, right?

Nope didn't realize... I just remember reading someone saying he got f'd because his stuff was incompatible. No clue really how it works or why it'd be irrelevant, but just wanted to help OP out and thought this was a good deal.

I just checked too and the CP-850 isn't that a great a deal as I had thought it was OP. It's quite a good deal still, but not that great when you can get a Corsair 850TX for $130 (and $30 MIR).

Well it used to be a problem, load-balancing the rails, but the manufacturers wised up and now it's barely a problem, if any at all.
You do realise that the CP-850 destroys the TX850 in every way, yes?
u see that enermax deal at zipzoomfly.com? get it; 720w modular

forgot to add; $50AR
makes it well worth it over the other PSUs

Your system, paired with a HD4890, will run fine on a Corsair VX450. With a 650w you can Crossfire 2 HD4890's.

No, I did not realize this.

Ask for the SeaSonic X750W. Probably just about the best power supply available right now. If you're going to be getting a PSU for Christmas, make it a really good one.
