New PSU or Not

Hi, I just bought an HD5850 and I wonder if my current psu (Cooler Master Real Power Pro 550W) is good enough to power my pc up.

- Phenom II 965 BE C2
- GA-MA785GT-UD3H
- 4x2GB DDR3 RAM 1333
- 2 Sata HDD
- 1 DVDRW
- 5 LED Fans on my casing
- Cooler Master N620 CPU Cooler

Btw, i'm not sure if this is important - I'm a heavy gamer and always play games with maximum setting.

It is more than powerful enough, 400w on the other hand would be pushing it a bit. I feel like an idiot for getting a 850w PSU

I'm sure your PSU would be fine for your current rig. The newer GPUs are actually getting more and more power efficient, believe it or not.

Using a Power Supply calculator for your specs, I got 317W (and that was with a 5870, not a 5850).

You'll be fine

Wow, thanks for quick respond. Really glad to know that I don't need to spend some extra money on a new PSU.
One of my friend told me that I need a 650W PSU, and when I look around, it seems like everyone is using a minimum of 650W PSU and it kind of make me a bit worry...

People tend to recommend higher PSUs than necessary.

It's better to do that than skirt the limits (like putting it on a 400w) but there's no reason to get a PSU that is double what you are using.

CM 550W should be 100% fine with your setup.

Don't stress, even though you game I highly doubt your PSU will EVER use over 500W of power. Plus, considering it is a decent brand PSU I'd be willing to trust it

If worst comes to worst, your computer will start to power-off on you under extreme load and you'll know that you need a new PSU.

Glad to be of assistance to you
