Hey, well i'm building a new rig:
  • Core 2 Duo E6300 1.86ghz
  • 2 x 1GB DDR2 667MHz
  • Coolermaster eXtreme Power 650W PSU
  • 2 x OcUK GeForce 7900 GS 512MB GDDR3
  • Scythe Infinity Heatpipe CPU Cooler
  • Asus P5N32-SLi Deluxe nForce4 SLi X16
I was wondering if any1 could give me an idea of what OC speeds i'm looking at achieving once i get up and running.

Ta muchly, Ashper

Sorry but you're not going to get very far with that motherboard. It is known to hit about 250FSB (Is it C2D compatible at all?) and if you're lucky you can hit 270FSB. That means only 200-300MHz overclock.

10%-15% tops. Core 2 Duo stock is 266MHz FSB, so you might hit 300MHz if very lucky.

nForce4 + Intel is an absolute no-no if you want to overclock. It just won't do it. Sorry

I'd recommend to get an Intel 975X based board, and either run Crossfire on it, or SLI with modded drivers.

Or, just get a single 8800GTS (for about $475 - note..this is the GTS not the expensive GTX - it should be out soon... next week or so).

A good board is the ASUS P5W-DH Deluxe (Crossfire or SLI with modded drivers at x8, x8 bandwidth). That board should take you over 400MHz on the FSB and likely push that CPU over 3.0GHz.

GonX: yes, the board does support C2D.

Welcome. Really good to hear you didn't buy it yet. I have the ASUS P5W-DH Deluxe. It's a pretty nice board.

Since you have not bought it yet, can you give us more details about the parts? I would like to know which brand of RAM you're looking at most specifically. For the E6300, I would recommend DDR2 800 RAM, or good DDR2 667 RAM that can hit beyond DDR2 667 speeds (like the Crucial Ballistix).

Also, I am not a big fan of Coolermaster for the PSU choice.

In short, what's your budget for these parst

  • Core 2 Duo E6300 1.86ghz - Skt775
  • 2 x Ebuyer 1GB DDR2 667MHz PC2-5400 240pin Extra Value Ram
  • Coolermaster eXtreme Power 650W PSU - ATX 12V V2.01 120mm Fan 20+4pin
  • 2 x OcUK GeForce 7900 GS 512MB GDDR3 TV-Out/Dual DVI (PCI-Express)
  • Scythe Infinity Heatpipe CPU Cooler (Socket 478, 775, AM2, 754, 939, 940)
  • Asus P5N32-SLi Deluxe nForce4 SLi X16 (Socket 775) PCI-Express Motherboard
I know thats not what you wanted to hear for the RAM, but i'm at budget now
(getting a case, monitor and other stuff but didn't bother to mention them).

All i want to do is get the E6300 above 2ghz really, if it can achieve that i'll be happy. Maby when i have more money i can get better stuff but for the moment i'm really limited (damn university fees!!!)

How much is the Ram costing you?

I would like to see better RAM still.... At least a budget series of a well-known brand.

Checking some things out... be back

This is actually cheaper:
2Gb (2X1Gb) Corsair Value Select, DDR2 PC5300 (667), 240 Pin, Non-ECC Unbuffered, CAS 5-5-5-15 £133.40 Inc VAT

However, I would recommend at least this:
2Gb (2X1Gb) Corsair TwinX XMS2, DDR2 PC5400 (667), 240 Pin, Non-ECC Unbuffered, CAS 4-4-4-12 £175.71 Inc VAT

And the motherboard:
ASUS P5W DH Deluxe i975X, S775, PCI-E (x16), DDR2 533/667/800, SATA II, SATA RAID, ATX £144.16 Inc VAT

Since you don't plan a spectacular overclock, why did you pick such an expensive (but excellent) cooler? An Arctic Cooler Freezer 7 Pro would do just fine for £17.03 Inc VAT.

Damn you Chozart, you beat me too it.

That XMS2 for a little bit more is excellent ram and will save you in the long run

Hmm i can afford to go 2 the Ram u reccomended, the "2Gb (2X1Gb) Corsair TwinX XMS2, DDR2 PC5400 (667), 240 Pin, Non-ECC Unbuffered, CAS 4-4-4-12", so thnxs for that
. Not sure about the mobo though, i'm an nvidia guy and had my heart set on SLI..... if theres a way to get that board to run sLI i'll go for that 2.

And about the cooler, i thought the board would allow better OC's so i chose that one.

The Asus P5W DH Deluxe can indeed run SLI with modded drivers!

Now, I don't know where to get those drivers... Let's hear it from the nVidia guys (maybe you want to post a thread in the nVidia section asking for them)

And with the ASUS board, do stick with the Scythe... it is indeed an excellent cooler.
