With Google Sketchup, a couple guys I know drew their next year's dorm room to scale and modeled the furniture to virtually find the best arrangement.

Another vote for google sketch up. I use it for almost all my planning. I'm currently designing a new computer desk for myself with it.
Can't go wrong with sketchup

Funny thing...when I was younger, I actually took measurements of my bedroom and all furniture, then made little posterboard cutouts scaled, so I could re-arrange my room before I re-arranged my room.

Man, was I sad...lol...what am I saying...I still am...lol

Yea, I would also recommend Google Sketchup cause it's free.

Actually, before the advent of CAD, interior designer were doing exactly what you were doing. So you were pretty much a designer in the making.
