Was it all of the Recon3d's that were suboptimal, or just certain models? Could someone with more experience chime in? I can't remember and I can't find the original source that I read about them at the moment.

I have this card and for gaming it is pretty dang good. I have no complaints. Been using it with my Sennheiser HD 598s and directional sound has been significantly better than my Logitech G930s (bf3 is where I notice the increase the most). I think that for music is where it was supposed to be not as good as some of the older SB cards and some of the other brands definitely are supposed to be better if you are wanting audiophile sound. And I have noticed that music does not sound quite as good as some of my other sources, but I am no audiophile so take that for what it is worth.

That's what I remembered. They geared these cards almost exclusively towards gaming and as a result they suffer elsewhere.

Good for gaming, bad for general use is the takeaway here folks.
