Newegg Open Box Risk...

UPDATE: Go to post #17...yeah, there's an issue and I don't know what to do.

So I jumped on one of those monitors listed last week...an ASUS VW266H 25.5" monitor (sizing up from a 19"). So guess what St. Pat brought me today...

So, open box gamble you say...let's see what I got stuck with...

Looks like all the packing is at least there. The styrofoam is intact and the monitor is in the fine foam bag they usually ship with. Ah, but the cables are jacked up...but then those are only cables.

Well, whoever packed it back up at least had the decency to put the protective plastic sheet back over the screen. Nope, no scratches...anywhere at all actually. I didn't take a pic of it but it looks like it may have been serviced. The metal plate in the back where all the connection are shows some scratch marks like it was rubbed against the framing or something. Who knows. The plugs all looked fine though.

Looking beautiful!!! WOW! This thing is freaking huge! I love it...the screen engages enough peripheral vision to make me feel like I'm actually moving/flying...SWEET!!!! Newegg, I love you!

Same price...$224

The game is HAWX Demo.

I so love this thing...though I am getting frustrated with my old mouse speed not being enough to get from side to side with with one flick of the wrist. Set to 1920 x 1200 of course and it is so nice. It is pretty bright on normal setting so I think I will have to dim it down a touch.

Oh, and it did come with the manual as well, not that you really need one to figure them out but it was nice that it was there.

You know you've got a good monitor when you can't do that

So the DVI cable that came with this was clearly some old, used piece of junk and only had 2/3 of the pins present (middle 6 missing) so when I tried to use it and it didn't work I figured it was the cable. No big deal, I just used the DVI-VGA converter and hooked up that way and "VOILA!" we were rocking.

Well I finally remembered to pick up a new DVI cable at Best Buy yesterday (not a "best buy"...Geek Squad branded 8' was, don't laugh at me too hard, $100 but they are going back today) and I tried them out just now and guess what...nothing. As I mentioned earlier it looks like something might have been done repair-wise because there are uniform scratch marks for about 1/4" on the metal panel where the connectors are.

I am going to order a DVI-HDMI cable from the Egg today and see how that goes. If that doesn't work either what do you guys think I should do? I guess I could send it back to Asus for repair though, like an idiot, once I had it running and dismissed the cable as the issue I recycled the box so shipping it back will be a bit of a packaging nightmare. Also, how much if any image quality do I lose going with the VGA connection?

Thanks for your input.

I don't play video games, but for normal desktop use and viewing pictures/watching movies, I have noticed no difference between DVI and VGA. I am sure that there are others that are going to disagree with me and say that there is a perceivable difference, but I have not noticed one.

Hmm, DVI vs VGA..

I've honestly only read threads stating opinions and experiences with those two so I don't have any hard facts but, I'd have to say unless you were gaming on a 50" screen or something huge, I doubt you'd be able to tell the difference in picture quality.

I would at least contact newegg CS and see what they say. They may either offer to replace it or might even give you a partial refund. The next step would be Asus and see if it is warranty covered. There is a difference, but it is much like good sound cards. Some people can tell a difference while others can't. When I first got a DVI monitor, I switched back and forth a few times and honestly couldn't see a difference. I guess it would be different if they were side by side.
