It seems to be getting a little more difficult to find these cards retail, so I'm wondering what the next step up is.

I know I saw a chart once but I can't remember where in the slightest.

9600GSO is a rebadged (basically) 8800GS.
The 8800GS's were discontinued but the 9600GSO's are still in the market.

I recently went from 8800gts (1st gen) to a 9800GTX "+" and it was a decent improvement for the $. But im going to stepup to a 260GTX 216 soon.

Funny thing is (or not so funny) when I used EVGA percision and OCd it a little tiny bit and then ran ATITool to scan for artifacts I heard this funny squeeling noise from the GPU (ive heard this is common) and I set it back to defualt. Well I swear it runs about 20FPS slower. I wonder if I broke something lol. Btw is using evga percision under warrently becuase I could not find anything on their site.

A slight step up would be a 9600GT, then a 8800GT.

A 9600 gso will get close to 5k ppd(96sp's) a 9600 gt has 64 sp's and get's 3500-3800ppd. For folding a gso is better.

I second that.

9600GSO == 8800GS
9800GT = 8800GT (+hybridPower)

9600GT will be slower.
Bad thing is that the 9 series Cards are more expansive that the nearly same 8800 models...

Newegg doesn't have any single slot 9600GSOs that are "single slot" on the cheap end.

Bummer. And the ones on TigerDirect have rebates... which I'm not good on getting. <_<

The next step up from a stock 8800GS, is a vmod'd GS..

*If you are looking for a GS.. consider either a standard EVGA or a 'top-dog' edition XFX.. both use good IC's for memory [wither Samsung, or Infineon..and not the crap Quimonda]..

They're supposedly very good, but make sure you get 256 mb... i hear the 254 mb model is less 1337
