*Look at last post*

I need a new cooler for my Phenom II X4 965 and im just wondering what could I get, sicne ive never bought aftermarket CPU coolers.

Also wondering if I should buy a new case, either CM690II or HAF 912

Any suggestions ?

Big question is how much do you want to spend and will you be OCing this CPU? There are so many from the small Hyper 212 from CM to the large and powerful Nochua NH-D14. Here the new Antec A50 and A70 coolers are nice as well as the CM V6 GT cooler. Could also go with a Corsair H70 for around $100.

For cases I love the 690 II had one and wish I would not have sold it. Not a big fan of the 912 for style reasons but that is just me. I think the 690 is a bit better for fan options and cooling. You can also remove the lower HDD tray and have extra room for rad or 2 fans at bottom.

Im planning to OC the CPU to about 3.7-3.8ghz.

Im living in europe, so I dont know about those US prices, but yeah.

Is there a reasonable cooler that isnt absolutely HUGE and will keep my CPU cool ?

What about a Akasa Venom, Akasa Venom Nano, Akasa Nero V2 or Titan Fenrir Evo ?
Im interested in that Nero cooler, not sure if anyone had it before ?

Also how big would the temp difference be between a Akasa Venom Nano and a normal one ?

Best bang for buck option is going to be CM690IIAD and CoolerMaster Hyper212+. You might want to pick up some extra fans to fill a slot or two left open in the 690. I use both that case and cooler, and have a San Ace(1011) on the cooler and rear exhaust...love it!(love the fan controller too lol!)

for a budget friendly set up get the 690/212+ and a second bushmaster fan from CM to stick on the back side of the 212+ for push pull, then get another fan for the side pannel and your doing great for cheap!! if you want it to be close to silent use another CM 140mm fan on the side pannel(same as the 690II 140 fans) and a Y splitter off the CPU fan header to tone down the bushmasters when not in use. my 2 cents hope this helps

Ok, ive decided to go with a Titan Fenrir Evo, it's pretty big, but I want to ask something first.

http://overclockers.co.uk/pimg/MB-424-AS_400.jpg

This is my motherboard, I'm using the 2 BLUE RAM slots.
Ive been told the Fenrir Evo will block the black ones, which im fine with.

Am I fine buying the cooler without worrying it will block the blue slots ?

the ram im using is 4GB DDR3 G.Skill RipjawsX

....Or maybe not.

I kept looking for coolers and noticed 2 that cought my eye,

Coolermaster Hyper 212+
Arctic Cooling Freezer PRO 13

Out of the two, which one would be a better choice and also would overclocking be possible ?

I can stick with Fenrir EVO, but im not sure if it will block the blue ram slots in the screenshot I posted, so if anyone can help me out, ill be glad.

I think it should be fine, the Fenrir isn't too wide. Here's a pic (of an Asus X58 board) that shows how far it will extend. Will block the black but stop short of the blue:

Stay away from Arctic Cooling. Very disappointing coolers. The Hyper 212+ is a favorite here on OCN. It performs almost as well as coolers that cost 4 times as much.
If you are concerned about the size of the cooler, you can always get a 92mm heatsink. Something like this Xigmatek would work, but it won't cool as well as a 120mm heatsink and will be noisier.

It's a long shot for anyone to be able to definitely say whether or not the Titan will block the blue slots that you are worried about, because they really would have to have first hand experience with that particular cooler and mobo. However looking at both your motherboard and picture of that cooler installed on other motherboards it does not look like it would block more than the black ram slots. The actual cooler itself doesn't look to extend past the CPU socket hardly at all so you would only be looking at about 25-30mm past the CPU socket mostly from just the fan. Like I said though this is just a guesstimate but I'm fairly confident in it.

Regarding the other two coolers you mentioned, the CM Hyper 212+ is highly regarded as a good bang for the buck cooler and I have it's little brother the Hyper TX3 and I and happy with it. A pitfall I have noticed though are that the base is aluminum with the direct touch heat pipes going thought it. The problem is this creates small gaps between the copper pipes and the aluminum base which would either trap air (which is a bad conductor) or would need to be filled with TIM which is better than air being there but still less than ideal. Here in this picture you can see the gaps I'm referring to.

The AC Freezer Pro and the other hand looks to be similar to the Hyper 212+ but superior in a few areas. For one while it does not have "direct touch" heatpipes it's heatpipes contact very closely with it's entirely copper base and it's heatpipses are 8mm as opposed to 6mm on the Hyper 212+. This should have two benefits of both not having the gaps between the different metals as on the Hyper 212+ as well as the benefit of copper being a better conductor than aluminum. The second benefit of the AC freezer over the CM Hyper 212+ is the little additional downward blowing fan on the Freezer that is supposed to help cool things like your VRMs, northbridge, and RAM. I don't know how well this will work in practice or if it will add undue noise to the equation but I am certainly intrigued, because VRM cooling is something I would like in my next cooler. The Freezer Pro should also be quieter than the Hyper 212+. All in all in your shoes I think I would actually get the AC Freezer 13 PRO, and I might even get it in my shoes too.

This review I from LegitReveiws read of it shows that it doesn't perform amazingly well temperature wise but I would only let that sway my decision if I was on Socket LGA 1366 because AMD and my SandyBridge don't require extreme cooling. If you do end up getting it let me know what you think of it because I am intrigued by it. Good luck have fun.

I would go with the hyper 212+. It's simply...amazing. Speaking from personal experience, and I've had quite a few coolers from all different manufacturers. As for a case recommendation, I suggest the Xclio windtunnel. It can be had for well under $100, and the dual 250mm side fans work wonders for today's gpu trend that involves dumping large amounts of hot air directly into the case

Thank you everyone, especially you Juano for writing so much and sacrificing your time, I appreciate it.

Looks like alot of people really do like the Hyper 212+, but what about overclocking ? Im buying a new case aswell, HAF 912, for better airflow.
Now, with stock cooler @ 3.4ghz the temp can go as high as 60C after a game of BC2.

So, say I went with the AC Freezer PRO or CM 212+, how much would the temps drop and would I be able to overclock ?

@spaceballsrules

Thanks for the recommendation, but care to explain why the Arctic Cooler 13 is dissapointing ? From what Juano said, it might infact be superior to the 212+

Also about the Fenrir, it really is tempting..

If the general consensus among a majority of people who have more experience than me say that the Hyper 212+ is the one to get then that's the one to get, because like I said I do know it has a reputation of being a very good bang for the buck. The only downsides I know for a fact are the ones that I mentioned, that the grooves in the Hyper base plate are a pain and that it will certainly be louder than the AC Freezer PRO 13, just by way of it running at 2000rpm instead of 1350rpm.

If you can afford the space requirements, which I'm fairly sure you can, then go with a 120mm cooler rather than a 92mm. I don't exactly regret going with my 92mm cooler but making the some choice today with the additional knowledge and experience I have gained since then I would have went with a 120mm cooler. Especially seeing as you would like to overclock and are even buying a new case to aid in airflow, don't limit cooling potential based on size. Noise on the other hand would be a something to consider trading raw temperature performance for though if that is something that matters to you, but again 92mm don't fare very well in that regard either.

The AC Freezer 13 is a very limited cooler. The performance is not very good, you can't replace the stock fan without having to use zip-ties to hold the fan on, and it is grossly overpriced. It's just that you can find better coolers at better prices.
