No 5870's available, what's wrong with a 5770?

Newegg had an ETA of today (11/23) for availability on the Sapphire Radeon 5870, but unfortunately, today came and went and no 5870, and no place right now has this card available for under $409.

I am now thinking of just picking up a 5770. It's a huge upgrade from my GTX 8800. How much of a performance difference is there between the 5770 and the 5870?

The 5870 is pretty much twice as fast as a 5770.

2x 5770 is equal or better than a 5870

a 5770 is approximately 1.4x better than a 8800.

cmon ocners back me up with some links to benchies... im too lazy to post links
Pretty much what ^^ he said.
You will see a HUGE increase from your current card.
The 5870 is more than 2x faster than 5770.
Buy 2 5770's, maybe 160-170 each. That's my opinion.
I'm personally wanting a 5850, which like the 5870 is nowhere to be found. I really don't understand how there could be such an extreme shortage of all these cards. Is every PC gamer out there upgrading right now or what?

That's all I am looking for. A 40% increase of performance is pretty darn good. And who the heck knows when the 5870 will even be available

Yes, if you're running low res with no AA.

High res, high AA, newer title = 5870

512mb is just not enough framebuffer for AA at high res on some titles, and if you buy 5770 CF, you're severely limiting your eye-candy capabilities.

Most folks that have that much money to spring on cards nowadays are running 1920x

Ok, if I get two 5770's, can I set up 3 monitors? How would that work when each card has 2 DVI outputs? 3 monitors does not divide into 4 DVI inputs equally; how does that set up work?

A 5770 is ROUGHLY at the same performance level as the 4870 when you look at the specs and see them compared in reviews. So you can extrapolate from there. Looking at a few reviews, for example, here you can compare the 4870 to the 5770. Doing a few clicks myself i havent found a 5870 to 5770 comparison but you might be more successful if you dig deeper than i did.
Another thing to consider is that if you go 5770CF, you have no upgrade path other than selling your cards and buying new ones. If you go 5870, you can add a second later down the road.

5870 is also more like to hold resale value for longer.

A 5770 isn't a huge upgrade from the 8800GTX in terms of speed. Maybe 10-20% faster. Of course, it uses much less power and supports DX11.

If his board supports it, he could always go tri-fire, though of course scaling won't be as good.

Of course if he is gaming at 1920x1080 or above and with AA enabled then he'll want the larger frame buffer and memory throughput like you've stated. I know the 5870's are hard to find but I think it is worth it to keep plugging away, or wait for availability to get better and the prices to drop to more reasonable levels.

I just saw what monitors you are using, and I firmly recommend holding out for a 5870.

Forget the 5870, dude, it's not available unless I want to pay $500 on ebay for it, c'mon, that's only for desperate idiots

I forgot to mention that I am also upgrading other components in my system with the following hardware:

i7 920
GIGABYTE EX58-UD5
G.SKILL 3x2GB DDR3-1333
SAMSUNG Spinpoint F3 2x500GB (RAID 0)

I'm hoping that with the above upgrades the 5770 should run flawlessly
The big advantage of a 5770 is that you can get them. Two in CF is still cheaper than a 5870 and you can get them

I'm not sure what you mean by the monitor comment, but I'll be honest about something. I purchased the SAMSUNG 2443BWT 24" monitor about 3 months ago and it looked like crap next to my 3 year old DELL 2407 monitor. Completely washed out colors no matter how much I tweaked the settings. I decided to stay with the DELL monitors.
