"No connections available"

As the title says I think Windows update may of done it as it was installing updates when I shut it down last night and the internet was working yesterday.

When log on the networky icon says "no connections available" And doesn't connect to anything. All the other pc's in the house can still connect to the network. If I try and run diagnostics it says the "diagnostics policy service" isn't running and if I try and start the service it gives me "error 5" Likewise DCHP service isn't loaded and if I try and start that I get the same error. I've tried new drivers for the ethernet as well as system restor from the windows 7 cd, from safe mode and normally through windows.

Google was useless on turning up a solution for the problem when i looked.

Are you running wire-less?

If so, do you have another program controlling your wireless access? Belkin, linksys, etc?

Is the message just saying error 5, or is it stating that dependencies are missing?

You may simply need to enable several services such as wireless zero config and its dependencies.
Is it connected to the network with no internet access or is it not even connecting to the network?
@02; Its connect directly to the router/gateway via an ethernet cable. The message box only mentions error 5 nothing about dependances being missing

@TheGrayNobleman; its not even connecting to the network at all
Permissions problem?

The article references Windows2000, but I believe the solution may be found in the same set of registry keys.

Hope this helps:

I also came accross the following excerpts from *deadlink*

My problem was solved by granting the network services account full control to the
hkey_local_machine\\system\\currentcontrolset\\ser vices\\dhcp
hkey_local_machine\\system\\currentcontrolset\\ser vices\pip registry keys...

Have you installed ANY Windows updates? I had problems with downloads but only after installed critical updates. Uninstalled them and downloads work again. However i was still able to get on the network and the web even when i could not download files.

@_02; changing the permissions didn't work, I am still unable to start the services

@lsudvm; I had a look and it turns out the update failed to install so possibly in failing to install itself it messed something up?

Update is called KB976098
Have you tried uninstalling the patch and then reconnecting to windows update to try again?

Well it appears that the patch didn't install correctly as under windows update it says "Failed." So there isn't really a patch to uninstall

Have you checked in "add or remove programs" ?

You can check the box that says "show updates" to show the patches. It may say something slightly different. If it isn't listed there, you should be able to connect to windows update and re-install the patch.

Or remove it from the add/remove panel and then run update again.

There is nothing listed in add or remove programs(or programs and features as 7 calls it).

I cannot get any sort of internet connection. Its like there isn't even an ethernet cable plugged in.

Under the network and sharing center it says that "The dependancy service or group failed to start"

I tried manually installing the update(downloaded it on another pc) however it says "this update is not compatible with your pc" or something to that effect

Thoughts:
Check the event log to see what other services are failing to start.

Assign a static IP to the NIC in the meantime.

Re-download the update from this location:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...displaylang=en

Not sure if getting it directly from the site will matter. I know there is some form of authentication or redirection that occurs from the update site.

Did you get multiple failing services at startup?

Lets ignore the permissions error for the time being and see if its really the dependancy that's holding you up.

Go to the DHCP service and check its dependencies. Are they not loading either?

Try to start the services one by one.

DCHP's dependencies seem to all be starting. Here is a list of all the event viewer errors i get. They are inorder from top to bottom:

This'll sound stupid, but did you try a different ethernet cable?
Try the repair option from the windows install cd..
