ok guys so i just got a new cpu cooler. i picked up a spire thermax eclipse 2. im looking to over clock but i really dont know where to start. i know some principles but i have a ton of questions. ok so the setup is:

mother board DFI Lanparty DK P45-T2RS Plus
CPU Intel core 2 quad q6600 G0
GPU MSI N460GTX Cyclone 1GD5
memory 4 1gb sticks of corrsair dominator
850w power supply

all air cooling the case has a royal **** ton of fans in it and should do well in an air cooling setup. 2 120mm fans on the cooler push pull setup. 2 120mm fans in the front of the case feeding in acroos the hdd's and dvd rom 2 120mm fans in the top venting out 1 80mm fan blowing to the underside of the MB 1 120mm fan blowing out the rear of the case 1 120mm fan on the bottom but im not sure which way and then 2 140mm fans in the side of the case blowing straight onto the components.

anyway ay suggestions and tips would be greatly appreciated. from fiddling with it tonight i got it to 3.2 then went for 3.4 but had some issues so went back to my stable 3.0 for now. seems as if my memory is my issue.

Some programmes you may want (or already have):

-HWMonitor - for temperatures and voltages
-CPUID CPU-Z - for clock speeds and voltages
-SiSoft Sandra Lite - for benchmarking before and after overclock
-SuperPi 1.5 mod - for benchmarking
-Prime95 (or Orthos Prime duo 95) - For stress testing

As you overclock you also increase the frequency of the RAM and therefore you have to lower its speed every now and again to allow the computer to boot.

For example with my Computer it runs the memory at 960MHz (stock @ 800) at 4GHz processor speed, but if I push it to 4.2GHz then the memory is then trying to run at 1060MHz and this is far too fast and it fails to boot and reloads the CMOS to previous stable settings. So the way to get around this is to lower the fine frequency modulator or the multiplier for the memory so that it runs slow enough. e.g. your overclock at 3GHz may have the memory multiplier set to 2 which works but on a higher overclock you will need to reduce this to 1.5 maybe.

For temperatures you need to monitor them closely while stress testing to make sure nothing goes above safe limits, also in the BIOS set your computer to reduce core speed if temperatures reach above 60 degrees.

For the voltages, leave them stock for the first increments and then as you get a higher overclock you will need to gradually increase them, NEVER over clock with voltages on AUTO as this could damage your processor or mobo. Set yourself a limit for the voltages as higher voltages cause more heat and most importantly over a certain limit can kill your components.

If I remember correctly the max voltages for your processor that intel recommend is 1.42v but I am not certain of this so double check. This doesn't mean you can't go over this, but I would be very very careful if you do as you are really pushing the risk of processor degradation.

You will eventually hit a wall somewhere to recognise when this happens.

Thank you. Now in my bios I don't see a memory multiplier. I see the settings as like 266/667 and 400/800 which is the range. I assume this is the multiples just not displayed as 1:3 1:2. So far I can only see my voltage increases in mili volts? Also in regards to memory timings and memory voltage my memory is a 2.1v set with timing something like 5-5-5-15 but the bios has this all set to auto. Should I be setting all of this to those settings before my overclock? Also how much faster can I set the timings?

Can you take a picture of the settings you do see, this may make it easier for me to see the memory settings. As for timings there should be some info on the Intel processor section of these forums though I should think.

Here

With the timings though you should be ok to overclock your processor without adjusting any of the timings (leave them on AUTO). You can play around with these timings once you have a stable processor frequency.

I think, in the first picture where it says DRAM speed [AUTO] this may need to be changed in order to lower the frequency for higher overclocks in order to allow it to boot.

With regards to the millivolts, I am unsure if VTT is the correct one to be altering, but the fact that it is in millivolts is not an issue it is just another way of displaying it.

I will have a better look at this in the morning when I have more time, but for now I hope this helps.

EDIT: Just had a quick look before I leave for bed, in picture 3, you can see the Vcore setting greyed out, that is the setting that needs to be changed in order to power the chip at a higher overclock. Obviously NB and other things may need changing but Vcore is the main point of interest for getting a stable overclock.

Ok I have found that the CPU vid special add is is in fact my voltage setting. I was shooting for a 3.4 earlier but couldn't get any stability I increased the voltage by 50 mili volts but miscalculated what a mini volt was I thought it was .5 rather than .05 lol. So I need more voltage also with the memory these stick are DDR 800 rated to oc to 1066 and run at 2.1v so I'll have to set the memory to 2.1 and then find what ever memory speed will get me as close to 1066 as possible then ishpuld be stable. So to start a build at 3.2 with memory running in 1066 is the plan. Let me know if this sounds right guys.

Ok so I'm a 3.28 365*9 multiplier. I have memory voltage locked in at 2.1 I have the timings manually set and I have vcore at 1.32 but when I run prime the 4th worker runs into an error after about 1-3 minutes. Continue with voltage?

Well a little update new clock seems very stable. Been knocking out prime for an hour now. 375X9 3.379 at 1.39v idle temps were 23-27 load temps have been steady at 50-51 not bad. Looks like she has quite a bit more in her but I think I'm going to stop here abd see how she games. I have a feeling I can squeeze 3.5 out if it at about 55-60 degrees. Well see.
