Noob ?: Matching RAM to GIGABYTE GA-MA790GPT motherboard

431 Views 3 Replies 3 Participants Last post by  deanlewandowski
Im looking into getting a GIGABYTE GA-MA790GPT motherboard.
From what Ive been reading the 790GX Northbridge and 750 South Bridge ar pretty good for overclocking.

I just want to make sure Im looking at the right types of RAM.
Also, is there a specific voltage/ timing I should be looking for.
Here is a couple sets of RAM I was looking at.

Patriot RAM was recommended on another board.
OCZ is PC3 8500 and Patriot is PC3 12800.
Motherboard says 1066/1333/1666. Will the Patriot RAM work?

OCZ Gold 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1066 (PC3 8500)

Thanks for any help I can get.

I've been looking at the same motherboard, so I'll be interested in the answer as well.

It looks like you've mis-read the descriptions mate, the OCZ kit is 1066mhz and the Patriot RAM is 1600mhz. Both kits will work on your motherboard, and though the OCZ has tighter timings, the Patriots should perform better.

I've had a quick search on newegg and picked out a few 1600mhz kits that have tighter timings thatn the Patriots, I have chosen kits that vary in price too, hope this helps.
