Noob Questions about Windows 7

688 Views 22 Replies 5 Participants Last post by  timxirish
I was wondering if it was possible to run Windows 7 beta off of a DVD. I see that for a flash drive you need one larger than 4 GB, which I do not have. Would I need to make a partition. I know I did this with linux and did not need to make one. Is windows 7 the same? The rig I would be using it on would the one in my sig. Like would it be possible to only run Windows 7 when I had the DVD in?

I am not sure if I am going to do this, it is more of a learning experience.

Thanks!

rep given for good answers

Thanks for the help, if anyone has more info or ideas please let me know!

And if I do decide to buy a 8GB or something, will running it from there work without a partition? This is my school computer, so I can't risk needing a reinstall and losing my data. Well I can but I just don't want to do it if I can prevent it.
its not possible, besides you wouldn't get the full experience booting of a CD/DVD it would be sooooooo slooooow even loading windows media player. ect would be very slow.

also you wouldn't be able to install/change settings as you would not be able to write to the registy and add files. this is what happens with Linux CD's.

you would want atlest a 8GB usb stick if you want to install games ect, but even that would be slower than your hard drive

bigal1542, yes you can run it off a DVD.

When it comes to Windows OSes, they are called Windows Preinstallation Environments, or WinPE for short. The latest version of WinPE (3.0) apparently comes with Windows 7 and is built off the 7000 build code. You can read more about it here. As the page implies, WinPE is not intended as a practical replacement for an install... But you can run programs on it very much like you would in an actual install.. You'll just need to have them in the ISO before you burn.

Think of it as a matinence type tool.. But you can browse the internet on it. And yes, you'll probably need at least 4GB ram if you want to use the DVD drive for anything else (so the ISO can unload to the RAM as a "RAMdisk").

Enjoy.

Again,im not 100 % sure, but just back up your data before you partition your Hard drive and you will be fine

Do I need to do a reinstall before partitioning a part off?

bigal1542, you can get WinPE 3.0 from WAIK 3.0 here. For more information on what you're downloading, read here.

From what I understand, you build WinPE with WAIK... And WAIK requires Windows 7 I guess? I suppose you can try booting WAIK on a machine w/o Windows 7 installed and see what happens, but if it doesn't work, try installing Windows 7 to a hard drive, run WAIK and build a WinPE image from it. I get the feeling it builds the image by taking files from your installed copy of windows 7 on the harddrive. With that in mind, I am guessing that any programs installed on the hard drive will be transferred to the WinPE iso in the process.

No,you can just partition from inside your current OS and then install 7 on that new partition

WinPE is a great thing. It's saved me many times from nearly fubared XP installs. If you haven't ventured into the land of WinPE, do take it for a test run.

ive tried the Linux live cd's they drove me crazy because of the speed, but as you said it would be handy for desperate situations
windows 7 cannot be used until it is installed onto something.

even then you would probably encounter issues with running it on different motherboards, etc

How do I do this? I googled and all I can find is ones that require you to do it at a reinstall? And if I don't like it, is it possible that I can just remove the partition and return it to my vista one? How would I choose what I am booting too?

Thanks to everyone for the help!

I'm unsure how much HD space you would need for the Windows 7 install to accept your partitioning layout. I'm not talking about minimal install size either-- In one attempt, for whatever reason, windows 7 install didn't accept a layout where it was allocated a 30GB partition. I don't remember how I went about getting around that, but my install ended with it getting 50GB.

A very good tutorial for dual booting with Windows 7 can be found here. I believe this is one of the better tutorials out there, as it's straight to the point, as well as provides a few pictures. So long as you have the HD space, it should go by very smooth.

Sweet, thanks, I'll try it!

How easy is it to delete a partition, like when Windows 7 actually comes out, I will prolly buy it.

Do I just use the Vista drivers for everything?
Will the programs that I have on one partition transition to the other, or will I need to install those again?
