I'm new to OC'ing and this is my question. I recently installed a via km400 mobo w/ athlon 3000+. The problem is that when it boots it shows i have an athlon 1.733. Then if i go and change the clock speed in bios so that it shows 3000+ and windows goes haywire. Anything I can do to rectify this? Thanks for your patience with a n00b:withstupi

Also...
Check the manual....
THhere may be jumpers to set the default FSB!
Your may be either 166 or 200MHz

changing jumpers would just change the bios settings. I tried just changing them in bios and this happened. Would it matter if i changed the actual jumper?

When i tried "magic bios" update software it said bios version is newer than the one on the website. This is weird...

Well... a 3000+ socket a bases on a 166 FSB x 13 @ 2167MHz
13x 133 = 1729 hence your on a 133 FSB...
Whether or not it's through jumpers or BIOS it's incorrect!
BTW... the jumpers do not change the BIOS settings.... just allow the BIOS to function within given perameters. Some 400 VIA chips required the correct FSB jumper settings for the BIOS to allow the CPU to function at the correct FSB!

Glad to help

Reminds me of the friend who asked me why his 2500 Barton was a dog ... brought it over and it was running on a 100 FSB jumper
