Hmm..I just reformatted an went from xp home to pro. Home sets up the speakers for you but i guess pro doesnt or i missed that step. i updated from msupdate...They are Altec Lansing speakers abotu a year or two old. I tried looking at the realtec 97 audio or w/e its named but liek nothing is installed...or working...right now i have the system speaker thing...wow that sounds drives me freakin nuts! please hlep

I Agree,
It sounds like you don't have the drivers and programs for the AC97 installed, without the programs installed he OS does not know which port(s) to send the audio data through.

You have to install the drivers that are on the CD that came with your mobo.

Go to the mobo manufacturer's website, and download the needed programs and drivers
