I have a 7800GTX in my new box. Once I had completed my Processor/RAM Overclock, I realised it did not help my FPS for gaming very much. I took a look and realized my Processor Cores were only being taxed about 50% each, so I went along to do a Video Card Overclock. I used the CoolBits hack to open up the NVIDIA Clock Speed Menu. It was originally running at 430MHz on the clock speed, and 1.3GHz on the memclock speed.

This is afterwards, and here is a CPU-Z report.



The clock speed only increased to 507MHz after the optimal, and 1.35GHz for the memclock.

I hear the 7800GTx can take beyond boiling point temperatures; so I was wondering about how high I could run it, but still get optimal lifespan/performance out of it.

Also, my FPS went up to 150 after the overclock (CS:S Stress Test). It was 130 before, and now, sometimes it peaks to 280! I'm satisfied, but I would like more for games like EverQuest II.

430 up to 507 is nothing to sneeze at! You may want/need to get aftermarket cooling to get any more out of it.

The kind of fps you are seeing is downright excessive (but also impressive). There is no need for more fps!

EQ2 should not have an issue running high fps with that system.

Games that are not multithreaded will not push the cores beyond 50% each (or 100% for a single core).

Have you tried running your ram at slightly higher speeds? I dont know which chips are on your ram, could you tell me which model of corsair you are running?

Here is the RAM I'm using. Also, if the 7800GTX can take as much heat as I hear, couldn't I just turn up the clock/memclock more, as long as I keep the case cooled down?

Also, the Multithreading still confuses me; I understand with two cores, if it is multithreaded, it will run faster. So why does it use both cores if it is not multithreaded. Also, how can I tell if a game is Multithreaded, as in, is it on the box?

And I haven't tried running it at higher speeds because my Motherboard RAM Dividers are set values that I can't just edit without a BIOS hack.

Multicore proccessers really only help with CPU intensive Applications. Its like having a single shotgun barrel getting shot is a single core. Dual barrel shotgun covers more info, but this only occurs in multithreaded programs. Although I have heard of multithreaded patchs for games but have never really seen any, or know if they work. IMHO dual core is not at all worth it, and whats the point of buying dual core if next year quad core comes out. If technology keeps going the rate its going we will have 8 cores on our cpu's by the year 2009. When will it end... will we ever be satisfied...

Of course there will be new cores soon, but then there will actually be applications supporting dual cores like the Unreal 3 engine. And while those quad cores are out, they won't be supported yet and people will be saying why buy the quad cores yet, they're not worth it.
Plus, the prices of those will be higher at first anyway. If you never take a dive at buying pc parts, you'll never buy b/c there is always something better around the corner.

Look it up to be sure, but I'm pretty sure that Everquest II has the frames per second locked at 30. Nothing you will do will increase that, but you can at least make sure it never dips below that. Also, many people aren't aware, but EQII is one of the most demanding graphic games out at the moment. If you're running on ultra settings, that alone should make you happy. I know their forums are filled with people that had to upgrade their video cards just to be able to play it on the lowest settings.

Wrong, Once there is dual core support there will be quad core support because all in all it counts as multi threaded not dual threaded applications. So if you do buy a dual you will want a sex core in a few years

But that's a bit like saying never upgrade your GFX as there's a faster one planned.

Dual core support is out now for COD2 and also Quake4. Both of these patches have problems, particularly with Nvidia cards and I think you're right in saying that at the moment there's no need having a dual core if you just play games, for me.
However, this is really dependent on your Hardware and where the bottleneck is for games. The bottleneck for these 2 games at the resolutions I play is on the GFX and not on the CPU, therefore the dual core (SMP) support doesn't have any effect on framerates.

With the upcoming UT2007 and other demanding games that are planned, then the bottleneck may well switch to the CPU for these games, as with my GFX I'll most likely have to play at lower res and/or lower detail rates. In which case a dual core would be of great benefit and could see some nice gains in performance. Have to wait and see how it all pans out really

In an attempt not to stray from topic; how much could I overclock this to with stock cooling?

And on the multithreading, while it may not run one application or game faster, why does it use both cores while doing it? Such as CS:S? Also, couldn't I set the affinity of the game to one core, and then affinity of my stuff like AIM, MSN, Xfire, and such to another? Or would that lower performance?
